Title: Bass lessons for newbies.
Post by: arthur59 on July 28, 2012, 05:56:16 PM
I need to know how many newbies would be interested in me posting bass lessons.
I'm not a professional bass player I'm just an average player who don't mind shearing the thing I've learned over the years. ;)

You can find some breakdowns here.    http://m.youtube.com/user/malthumb (http://m.youtube.com/user/malthumb)

For the most part I've kept it simple.....none of the fancier licks.....just how the song is structured.  Add your own spice.  Some of these are really old and I haven't added anything in a while.

You can also access the listing of chord charts that JeremyR started a while ago.  Hasn't been added to in a while, but there's a lot of good stuff in there.

Malthumb and Aruther don't forget about all the lurkers. Many may not post but will read and watch the videos. I know both of your both videos helped me a lot I still go back and watch Malthumb's video "You are good" just cause the reference to TLC's song.

Okay let's get started! Today i'll be teaching you a song by NUMBERS! the song is in  Ab, i'm not teaching you the bass lines but the progressions of the song as I hear it. I'll give you the numbers (notes) in three sections. (A B & C) then i will post a short video.

Section A:  1 2 3 #3  1 7 6  2 5 6 3 6 3 6 2 5 1-2 5 1

Section B: #6  6  5 1

Section C: #6  6  #5  5

NOTE! in the key of Ab  the  3 is C and the #3 is c# or Db. The 6 is F the #6 is F# or Gb  same notes but different names.
Feel free to ask any questions or post any commits, if i cant answer your questions i'm sure someone else here in this bass room can.

This is an exercise that will  help you memorize the degrees (distance from your root note to any other note in the scale your playing)  and help you with muscle memory. Use a metronome or drum machine set the tempo at 50 beats per minute and work your way up to 120 bpm preform these exercises in the low register and the high register (above the 12th fret) in all 12 keys...
Just to keep it simple lets start out using the most popular keys in gospel music. Bb  Db  Eb  Gb and  F.  For example play the exercise starting with the Bb major scale in your low register at 50 bpm working your way up to 120 bpm ?/? then start the exercise over playing your Bb major scale above the 12th fret, then move on to the next scale...GOT IT! ::)

Exercise one( Play the numbers)  1-4-5-2-3-7-6-1

Exercise two(play the numbers)   1-8-4-6-3-2-7-5

That's your assignment for this week! let me know your progress.

We will go over another song by numbers in the next video ;D

arthur59, out of curiousity,  what fingering do you use for the examples that you gave?  Or as a rule?

Starting with middle finger.

6   7-8
3-4   5
   1   2

or  7-8
   4   5   6
1   2   3     Starting with the pointer finger

Or anther pattern?

when I'm teaching someone the major scale i tell them to learn it in one position first, same thing when playing by numbers. The finger pattern start with your middle finger (2) the pattern is:   2- 4 next string 1- 2- 4 next string 1- 3- 4  this pattern works for all the major scales.

Hey gruvn-low this is an example of exercise 1 ( 1-4-5-2-3-7-6-1) above the 12th fret and below the 12th fret @ 120 bpm, in the key of Bb. excuse the string buzzing. Right know I just want you to get used to playing the intervals (numbers) then later we'll deal with adding notes (numbers) to the progressions.

Also get used to singing the intervals, the numbers. Sing: "1-4-5-2-3-6-7-1 - 1-4-5-2-3-6-7-1 sing throughout the day while at work, school, the gym just sing "1-4-5-2-3-6-7-1  1-4-5-2-3-6-7-1"etc...

This is also part of our ear training, singing the numbers! ;)

The reason for these particular numbers? I just want you to get used to playing and hearing different intervals shapes, and I want your fingers to get used to playing different intervals (numbers) in one hand position.

If you were playing the numbers and singing the numbers like I suggested you should be able to play exercise one (1-4-5-2-3-7-6-1) WITHOUT LOOKING AT THE NUMBERS! TRY IT, IF YOU PLAY THE WRONG NUMBERS (notes) YOUR EARS WILL LET YOU KNOW! ;D

We're going to combine ear training and playing by numbers together :D

These lessons are great for bass player that play on Sundays at church. I'm loving the lessons bro, keep it coming.

O.K. let's do this, that is what I'm aiming for.
Title: Re: Bass lessons for newbies?
Post by: arthur59 on August 11, 2012, 08:51:19 PM
Now we're going to work on filling in the space in between the progressions. We can do this by adding the 5th and the 8th (octave), chromatic approach from above or below along with: articulation, tone, rhythm, groove etc.. this is the simplest way to fill in the space.

Our progression for this lesson is: 1-5-6-4-3-2-5.  when we play the"1 lets add the 5th & the 8th or the 8th & the 5th with articulation before we play the "5"now lets add the 5th & the 8th or the 8th & the 5th before we play the "6" now lets add the 5th & the 8th or the 8th & the 5th. now play the "4"add the 8th   play the "3" add the 8th and play the "2' add the 8th, 5

We can also play the "1" then add 4 #4 before we hit our target number the 5 then play #5 before we hit our target number the 6, then play 4 add the 8th, 3 add the 8th, 2 add the 8th, 5. This is the chromatic approach from above we can also play the chromatic from below, walking down to our target number. Don't forget o add articulation, tone rhythm, groove etc...

Play the progression in the key of Emj for this lesson. Play the 5th & 8th or 8th &5th add the chromatic approach before you hit your target note (number) I want you guys to work on this before I post the video. First play the progression without the added numbers (notes) in one hand position  starting at 50 bpm and work your way up to 120 bpm. Then play the progression without the added numbers this time with the low 1- 5-6-4-3-2-5. At 50 bpm and work your up to 120 bpm. Then add the extra numbers in the space between the progression and play it in the LOW REGISTER ! :D

Okay guys lets do this, before you pick up your bass to play the progressions get in to the habit of singing the progressions first. Then pick up your bass and play the progressions, if what you were singing sound like what you are playing you should fell like this  ;D  ;D  if not you may fell like this  :'( ... but don't worry keep singing the progressions (numbers) and you will start to feel like  ;D ;D  in no time! Hey arthur59 I do have a question. I have the progression but as far as the fill ins go do we use the 5th & the 8th to fill in between each progression or just play around with it until we just get comfortable using these fill ins. If this makes any sense this the best way I could communicate what I'm trying to ask.
Title: Re: Bass lessons for newbies?
Post by: arthur59 on August 13, 2012, 06:56:52 PM
Hey Bass4God, play the fill ins in between each of the progressions, use the 8th & 5th in different order you can play the 5th then go back to the 1 you can play the 8th 5th and1 play it in different rhythms, add ghost notes, slides, hammer ons, pull offs, slap, pop, bend the strings any one of these tools (articulate) have fun and groove with it.

This is preparing you for the next assignment! remember guys "Each one Teach One" in Jesus name! if you understand the lessons and your Bro/Sis don't jump in and help. :)

Keep working on it Bass4God & Gemini47, and remember to sing the numbers and play the progression at different  tempos and different rhythms. The next assignment will be a TEST! :o  to see if you understand this stuff  ;D.

I've been invited to play at a three night revival this week so I probably wont post the test until Saturday!

The keyboard player who invited me to come and play at his church for the revival  sent me three songs that his choir is going to sing. Two of the songs I never heard before, I started working on one, this is how it went. I played the song one time through so I can hear the flow of the song. then I played it again, stopping, rewinding, playing, this time listening to the progression ( numbers) and singing the numbers. Then I pick up my bass and started playing the progression (numbers) that I was singing ... let me say this, I learned 3/4 of the song before I picked up my bass! so you know I felt like  ;D. Hey guys this number thing really work!

For this first test you have to take the progression from the previous lesson and come up with your own bass lines then apply it to this song. I'm not going to play the bass or call out the numbers to you. I'm trying to put you guys in real playing situation that bass players go through when playing for a church. These are thing you don't learn from a "how to play bass for beginners book" this is real talk.  Not all keyboard/ organ players are going to be willing to help you learn the songs, and For that reason as a bass player you MUST be able to hear the progression (numbers)  for yourself and then add your bass line to it. First listen to the numbers then play just the root notes then add your fill ins. let me know how it turnout.  Oh and there's one number you don't here in this song out of the previous progressions (numbers) that I gave you...what number is it? ?/?

Hey allaround, maybe your cousin can start out by becoming a member of LGM, this way he can start asking questing for himself .

I've got the 1-5-6-4-3-2-5 but I don't get the missing number. The fill-ins work good especially the chromatic walks for this tempo type song. Well at least it works for me.

At the top of the Bass Forum there is a thread that has been stickied.  Here is the link to that thread.....   http://www.learngospelmusic.com/forums/index.php/topic,43355.0.html (http://www.learngospelmusic.com/forums/index.php/topic,43355.0.html)

Have your cousin START his or her LGM experience with that thread.  It identifies the various parts of the instrument and identifies the notes on the fingerboard and gets into base level discussion of keys and chords.

Then have him start Arthur59's "Bass lessons for newbies" from....the....BEGINNING.  If your cousin does that, he or she will be groovin' solidly in no time.

The chromatic approach, walking up to or down to your target note (number) is just one tool to add to your bag of goodies experiment with the 5th and 8th (octave) as well  and don't for get about "ARTICULATION" articulation is like adding spices to your meat to give it flavor, the meat can be prepared well but without the spices the meat tast...plane.  Also don't for get to "GROOVE", the groove is something you feel, you have to know what your doing and feel it, and the people around you have to feel it as well and when that happen... then your groovin!  Let's add all these tools to our bags of goodies...hope you guys have a big tool bag because your going to need it with all the tools i'm going to give you.  :o

FYI even though were learning to play by "numbers" it's very important that we learn our note names and be able to find it fast on our fret board.  I played with a keyboard player last night who was calling out note names instead of numbers. As gospel bass players we must be able to play by numbers and notes.

My goal is to prepare you for every situation that you may face as a "church bass player"  ;)

Hey Arthur for the progression i know it's the 1-5-6-4 then back to the one. Sometimes from the 1 to the 5 i used the 2 as a fill. And to get from the 6 to the 4 i used the 1 as a fill. And sometimes returning to the 1 from the 4 i used the 5 as a fill. Am i going in the right direction?

After reviewing the song i was able to hear the progression 1-5-6-4-1. I could also hear from the 6 it moves to the 2 where there is a chromatic walk from the 2-3 to the 4 and walked back from the 4-3-2 to the 1.

NOTE: Most of the time the "2" wants to resolve to the "5" and the "5" wants to resolve to the "1"  The 2-5-1 is a common progression and you will here this in a lot of songs.  Get used to herring this progression as a "group"

Okay guys we're going to continue with the next test.( ear training )   By now your ears should be condition to hearing the numbers. If you had problems hearing the numbers in the last test don't worry keep working at it and before you know it you'll hear it loud and clear. This time I'm not going to give you all the numbers, I'll just give the root number, the "1" and you have to listen to  and sing the rest of the numbers with out your bass! ?/?  Then write down your answers, post it! when you post it then go back and listen to the song again and if you want to change your answer, go head change your answer, change it as many time as you like, then when you feel confident about your answer just say, " this is my final answer."  Try not to cheat by picking up your bass before you post your answer. Now once you post your final answer then pick up your bass and check your self!  ;D...Oh the "1" is "B"

I'll give you guys a few days to work on this before I give the answer.  When you're playing in a live situation with the choir/praise team and other musicians and you (bass player ) don't know the song. you must be able to hear the numbers and respond quickly! One of the test that I'm going to give is going to be timed... you'll have a few min to come up with your answer, it will be an open book test (with your bass in your hands)  :D . I'll try to set this up so that most of us can be on line at the same time for this test.

We're not going to rush through, "hearing and playing by numbers" I want to make sure you guys understand this stuff before we move on. we're  also going to continue learning how to add "fill ins between the numbers. I recommend using headphone while working on these lessons. ;)

Hey guys there are two ways we listen to music: "passive listening"- hearing - without hearing and "Active listing"- listing for details. From this point on every time you listen to music make it "ACTIVE LISTING" lets listen for details of the song, is the song going from the "1" to the "4" or from the "1" to the "6" do you hear the "2-5-1 progression or the '4-5-1 progression etc... playing by ear is a skill just  like reading music is a skill. Don't think just because you play by ear there's no work behind it. You have to know what to listen for and how to listen. There's musicians who learned the skill of reading music but can't play by ear because they didn't learn how to. And there's musicians who learned the skill of playing by ear but never learned how to read music. The point is learning to play by ear is a skill and we have to know how to develop it.

Some of you are still having problems hearing the numbers (progressions) so from this point on we're going to K.I.S.S (keep it simple stupid)  and approach this from a different angle. We'll work with smaller units first then go on to bigger and more challenging ones. THERE'S NO RUSH! step by step, we'll take this journey.  "EACH ONE TEACH ONE", IN JESUS NAME  :)

Thanks gruvn_low this is what we have to start doing, listen to the song QNE TIME and try to catch the numbers (progression), even if you don't catch the whole thing. If the few numbers that you catch are right and you start playing it on your bass a lot of times - the number that you didn't catch - you will hear it when you start playing.  You can also make an educated guess. most of the time the 3- would lead to a 6, the 6 would lead to the 2.The 2 would go to the 5. The 5 would lead to the 1

Here's a few common progression that you will hear in gospel music: 1 3 6 2 5 1.     1 7 6 2 5 1.    1 2 3 4 5 1.      1 4 5 1.   1 4 5 6 4 5 1.  1 4 5 6 4 5 1.      1 4 5 2 5 1.  1 7 3 6 2 5 1. These are just a few!

I hope I am not making the process to difficult for myself, but I am trying to recognize the progressions going up the scale and down the scale which have their own unique characteristics.

Now we're going to focus on some of the most common progressions in gospel music.  We are going to break them up into three notes per group and each group will start with the same root note. So that we are all on the same page lets begin with the Db major scale, so Db will be the root note (the "1")

For this lesson we're going to work with two groups. Group one is: 1-7-6 and group two is: 1-4-5. I want you to play group one for a minimum of 10 minutes a day.  Don't just play it but listen to the group of notes as a whole. Come up with your own rhythm, feel, tempo etc...

Then work on group two for a minimum of 10 minutes a day.  Don't just play it but listen to it as a whole and come up with your own rhythm, feel, tempo etc..

Remember  we are not going to rush this, ear training takes time to master and we are going to master it one step at a time. In a few days I'm going to post some songs with the : 1-7-6  and the 1-4-5 progression and" YOU WILL BE ABLE TO HEAR THE PROGRESSIONS LOUD AND CLEAR"...only if you put in the work. >:(  ;D

PS: on the 1-7-6 progression I want you to play the low 7 and 6.

I also want you guys to spend a minimum of 10 min a day working on listing to the sound of  the major interval shapes. Don't just play the major scale but listen to the sound of each interval in relation to the root note ( the "1") lets stay in the key of "Db major"

Play the 1 then play the 2 (major 2nd) listen to that sound what does that sound remind you of associate that sound with a color any color you like. Then play the "1" and the 3 (major 3rd) listen to that sound, what does that sound remind you of. Associate that sound with a color. Then play the "1" and the "4" ( perfect 4th )   what does that sound remind you of, associate that sound with a color. Then play the "1" and the 5 ( perfect 5th ) associate that sound with a color. then play the "1" and the 6 (major 6th ) add a color to it what does that sound remind you of. Then play the "1 and the "7" ( major 7th )...... then play the "1" and the "8" ( perfect unison )

Don't rush this pay attention to the details of the sound of each interval and compare the sound with each other. Compare the 1 and the 2 with the 1 and the 3. compare the 1 and the 3 with the 1 and the 6 etc...

POP QUIZ!  ;D put away your bass and open your ears. Y'all been working on two sets of progressions for 10 minutes a day for a few days. Now I want you to tell me which song has what progressions  ?/?  yo'll hear other progressions and passing notes ( fill ins) in the songs but I want you to concentrate and LISTEN for the progression that you worked on. The songs are not in the same key that you been practicing in (Db) and it really doesn't matter, just listen for the progression... sing the numbers!! then Post your answers.  :-X

In contemporary gospel music you'll hear a lot of "FAT CHORDS AND PASSING NOTES".  A keyboard/organ player can take a 1-7-6 chord progression and add some fat chords to it. But if you listen carefully, in between those "fat chords" you can still hear the 1-7-6 progression.

When your learning a song for the first time you want to listen for the "root notes in the progressions" before you start adding: colors, fill ins, passing notes, arpeggios etc...

Between then and now I might just throw in another "POP QUIZ"!!! ;D

PS: This should be "hilarious" I got this idea from Bass4God. What are some of the names you guys call your bass...He call his "Big mamma",  I call mines "BROWN SUGAR" ;D and you call yours...

Okay guys the answer is 1-7-6 for the first two songs the third song has the 1-4-5 progression and the forth song has the 1-7-6 progression. Pick up your bass and play along with the songs. The next set of numbers I want you to work on is: 1-3-6 and 2-5-1. You know the routine, a minimum of 10 minutes a day, different rhythms, tempos etc... Continue working on the previous sets of numbers as well. Ear training is a continuous process WE ARE TRAINING OUR EARS TO RECOGNIZE A CERTAIN GROUP OF NUMBERS.

Is song 1 in the key of F#/Gb?
F# and Gb are identical in pitch but written differently according to the key in which they occur (Enharmonic) when playing by numbers it doesn't matter which one you use for your root note.(the "1") Pick up your bass and play a 4-5-6 in F#. Then play a 4-5-6 in Gb...same sound right? Now if you use note names the 4-5-6 in F# would be: B-C#-D# and in the key of Gb the 4-5-6 would be: B-Db-Eb...

YOU SHOULD BE DOING THIS EVERYDAY AS PART OF YOUR EAR TRAINING ROUTINE.

POP QUIZ!!  >:(, ;D just two questions. This song has two sets of progressions that we're working on. Question #1 listen closely and name the progressions. DON'T USE YOUR BASS, USE YOUR EARS! The song has two parts to it, the verse and the chorus they both have the same progressions they just change keys. Question #2 what's the interval shape of the key change? where does it go, to the 4,5,b5 etc... sing the intervals and tell me what's the number it goes to.

Listen closely to the piano in the verse, you can hear the progressions ( numbers) very clearly... That's the whole song, you should be able to play this whole song in your head by numbers before you pickup your bass.

When learning a song you want to listen to the keyboard/organ/piano player for your progressions and listen to the drummer for the groove. ;)

PS: POST YOUR ANSWERS BETWEEN NOW AND  09/12/12

I'm asking you to name the progressions and name the key change. The verse starts on the "1" then on the chorus it changes to the what?   the verse and the chorus share the same progression but in a different key... I hope that make sense  ?/?

First make sure your bass is tuned. Now just listen to piano part during the verse of the song. listen to that part over and over again. Now pick up your bass and play along with the piano part staying one step behind the piano part. Play what you think it is and see if that sound matches what you hear the piano player is doing.... WAIT A MINUTE!! PICK UP YOUR BASS AND PLAY THE 1-3-6 THEN TELL ME WHAT NOTES YOUR PLAYING!  ::)

The two sets of of progressions would be the 1-3-6 and the 1-7-6 I hope I got it this time.

Best I can hear is a 1-7-6 in Bb and up a mnor third to a 1-7-6 in Dd.  Back and forth with the extra 6-7s+ thrown in.

Keep working on your interval shapes and listen to the sound of the: 1 to the 3 and the 1 to the 6(high 6 and low 6) and the 1 to the 4 and the 1 to the 5 and the 1 to the 7 ( high 7 and low 7) and the 1 to the 8 and the 1 to the 2.  take your time and listen to the shapes, listen,LISTEN, LISTEN, YOU WILL START TO HEAR IT!  :o ...YES YOU WILL!

When learning a song you want to listen to the keyboard/organ/piano player for your progressions and listen to the drummer for the groove. ;) !

PS: POST YOUR ANSWERS BETWEEN NOW AND  09/12/12
MOV4A0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJd36P1-454#)
The answer is 1-7-6 and 2-5-1 in the key of Bb, then it change keys. The interval shape of the key change is a flat 3rd ( minor 3rd ) Db! then its 1-7-6 and 2-5-1...in Db!

When transcribing songs for ear training don't chose difficult material. Begin with simple songs and develop from there. Traditional gospel music is a good place to start, you can hear the progressions very clearly. With contemporary gospel the progressions are there but it's a little harder to hear because of all the different chord tones that's being used.  ;)

Thank all you guys for the feedback on the lessons, those that post and those that send me a pm ( about 10 others) glad to know that these lessons are helping you.  :)

Hello everyone...first of all Thanks Aurthur59, your lessons are beginning to get a little clearer, now that I have learned the fingering for a couple major scales...secondly, I'm playing a six string, and the fingerings are a bit different, I've been trying to follow along as if it were a 5 string but i think its making it more difficult for me....Its getting a little better but at times I feel lost, its like I can hear what needs to be played but my fingerrs end up somewhere else, what do you suggest, should i remove the b string for now?...in case you are wandering why I have the 6 string my hands are very big my pinky to thunmb stretch is 10.5 inches, from bottom of my wrist to tip of middle finger is 10 inches....and its very difficult for me to hold 4, and some 5 string basses...Man I don't know what to do

SATURDAY NIGHT JAM!! :o  A good bass player react to their surrounding when making music in a group. This interaction can only happen if you are able to LISTEN to the other musicians while you are playing your bass. By transcribing music you will internalize the sound you focus on, and your ears will begin to control your hands. Your ears will hear and your hands execute. The process of developing ear-hand coordination can be a SLOW one.  As your ears improves so will your ability to "HEAR" when playing in a group. Be patient with yourself. Be persistent

Here's a two chord progression, first listen to the progression without your bass then pick up your bass and lay down a solid "GROOVE" start with just the root notes then add the fill ins that we worked on from the earlier lessons. You will feel like your part of the band with this track, have fun! ;D

Lets take a look at adding "arpeggios" to our bass lines. Arpeggios are built from scale tones, a major scale has 7 notes 8 if you count the octave 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8  if you take the odd numbers: 1-3-5 from the major scale and played them one note at a time you would be playing a  Major arpeggio, or a major triad.  If you take the odd numbers 1-3-5-7 and played them one note at a time you would have a major 7th arpeggio.

Stay tuned more to come...with video examples  :o

playing inverted arpeggios. What is inverted arpeggios you ask! well it's just taking the notes of the arpeggio and playing them in different order. If we played the "D" major7 arpeggio: D- F# -A -C# ( 1-3-5-7) that's called the "root position"because the "D" is the root note of this major7th arpeggio. Now if we take that root note and place it at end of this major7th arpeggio we would have: F#-A-C#-D (3-5-7-1) this is called "1st inversion." Now if we take that first note after the root and placed it at he end of this major7th arpeggio we would have: A-C#-D-F# ( 5-7-1-3 ) this is called 2nd inversion. now if we played  C#-D-F#-A (7-1-3-5 ) this is called 3rd inversion. Now we have  4 different ways to play a D major7 arpeggio.

This video will deal with the "root position" I'll be playing the D major7th arpeggio with two octave: 1-3-5-7, one octave then 1-3-5-7 two octave. Start at 50 bpm then work your way up to 250 bpm  :o the real goal is 100 bpm but if you can play it at 250 then drop back down to 100 bpm... :D   The next video will be on the 1st inversion. :)

ROOT POSITION = 1-3-5-7
1ST INVERSION =  3-5-7-1
2ND INVERSION = 5-7-1-3
3RD INVERSION = 7-1-3-5
ALL = MAJOR7TH ARPEGGIO

EACH INVERSION WILL START AT A DIFFERENT LOCATION ON THE FRET BOARD.

START EACH EXERCISE AT 50 BPM ON YOUR METRONOME OR DRUM MACHINE PLAY IT 7 TIMES STRAIGHT WITH NO MES-SUP BEFORE MOVING TO THE NEXT HIGHER BPM. AT EACH HIGHER LEVEL PLAY IT 7 TIMES BEFORE MOVING TO THE NEXT....
THE GOAL IS TO PLAY IT  7 TIMES STRAIGHT AT 250 BPM... THE TRUE GOAL IS 100 BPM BUT IF YOU STARCH YOURSELF TO 250 BPM THEN WHEN YOU COME BACK DOWN TO 100 BPM  YOUR MUSCLE MEMORY SHOULD BE ON AUTO PILOT AND YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO PLAY THIS EXERCISE AND READ A PASSAGE IN A BOOK AT THE SAME TIME... OR AT LEASE HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH SOMEONE AT THE SAME TIME. :o

I think the best way for me to approach this is to play one octave at a time. I'll work my way up to 250 bpm...::) using one octave, then 250 bpm with the second octave then 250 bpm together!

Hey, Arthur59, you put us to work this time.  I can play that run at 50 beats per very easily.  250, man I don't know.  My fingers might not do that, but I am taking it as a challenge.  I'll let you know how I came out.  Quick three note runs are somewhat a problem for me.  For example, I have trouble playing runs such as the "I'll take you there" bass run.(Staple Singers) I have to skip a note.  (or "Honky Tonk" by James Brown)

My metronome only goes up to "250" bpm if it went any higher I would of had you guys shooting for that!! I can play it faster then 250. :o . I'm just trying to get you guys to stretch way beyond the mark, that's how we grow, by stretching.

Start at 50 bpm and work your way up to 250 bpm  ;D. I made a few mistakes in this video but you guys will get the idea. Let me know if you have any questions.

I can hold down the combination of the root and 1st conversion at 200 bpm for about a minute and a half. I am not done yet.

We played the root position 1-3-5-7, first inversion 3-5-7-1 and now the second inversion 5-7-1-3. Keep in mind we're still playing the DMj7 arpeggio.

This is the last inversion of the D Major 7th arpeggio, the 3rd inversion ( 7-1-3-5 ) starting on the B string at the second fret.

                                                                               USE IT OUR LOSE IT!

Now you have 4 option to use when your playing a "Major 7th arpeggio. We worked with the "D Major 7th arpeggio but you can apply the same finger pattern to any major 7th arpeggio. FIND A SPOT TO USE IT IN EVERY SONG YOU PLAY! IF YOU DON'T USE IT YOU WILL LOSE IT!

I'ii put up a simple song soon but for now play all four inversion together at 100 bpm 4 times. After you have completed that than  start the whole presses over again, this time in a different key. ;)

I was invited to play at an afternoon service today at a church I never played at before. I try my best to follow the keyboard player but I couldn't. I was listening for the progressions and every time I though I had it I didn't!!! the keyboard player was playing some fat chords and he was allover the keyboard and my ears couldn't grab hold of what he was doing. So I started to play solo...solo that they couldn't hear me. :(. You win some and you lose some this time I lost... but the battle is not over I will rise again!! :)

Man, that can be kinda rough if you never heard the songs and/or the way the keyboardist played them plus they followed no discernable pattern.  Some of the contemporary music keyboardists can come up with the weirdest chords, even for a known song. Even to the point that you don't recognize the song.  I don't envy your day at the program.  I can play lower than solo.  It is a key called Bb-voiceless.

Iv'e been in that situation a few times myself.  If i can't hear the the progression and the keyboardist is not telling me anything i just wont play for that song.

I'm playing all four inversions at 200 bpm!

I haven't posted for a while but I am still here. I have all inversions under my fingers.  We're waiting on you, teach.  If I keep this up, I might actually learn to play the bass.

Waiting for the teacher to step back into the classroom with the next lesson, ;D... I would like to post this question, I'm looking purchase some type practice tool that plugs into a wall outlet, that comes with a usb port for downloading songs from my computer, that loops, and has a metronome, any suggestions? I currently practice thru a yamaha mix board when my computer is on, but there are times when I get home from work(12:30a.m.) and would just like to practice by just plugging this ?? into a wall outlet, tune, and go. Like to keep the cost under $175.00. Thxs in advance.

Since the scales are all the same pattern, it is easy to learn the note location of them if you want to.  It is not at all necessary to know them but it is good to know them.  Choose the scale pattern that you want to use and start on, say Eb on the B string.  Play the scale pattern slowly watching which fret you are playing and say aloud the note that it happens to be. You would say: Eb-F-G-Ab-Bb-C-D-Eb  Speed kills on this practice routine, so take your time. Play it over and over, forward and backwards. Write it  out on some staff paper, or make note of it on preprinted charts.

It won't be very long before you will know those notes and where they are on the staff.  Then add another key.  Start out with the keys that you play most.  I most often use the patterns below.   Starting on the B string.  Eb-F  then on the E string  G-Ab-Bb then on the A string, C-D-Eb.   Or  Eb-F-G on the B string and Ab-Bb-C on the E string then D-Eb on the A string.  Start on any key and play the equivalent pattern and you are playing in that key.

Having a good knowledge of the circle of fourths helps because the bass(five string) is set up exactly like the circle of fourths.

Personally, when I play the bass, I'm just playing patterns.  So even though I know the notes fairly well, lack of use causes me to get rusty on them.  I know that the more experienced bass players here would use them more.

No hurry and saying the notes out loud are important.  15 minutes a day will do wonders.
