Title: Seriously, Book Clubbers???
Post by: LaylaMonroe on August 08, 2012, 01:28:51 PM
I think it's a crying shame we let the entire summer go by without doing a single book together.

Well, we still have a little over a month to go before it's over, so let's pick a book! NOW!!!

The floor is open for suggestions (but please don't make more than 2 suggestions *glances quickly at BLY* lol).

We can do a good novel (Christian or secular fiction, doesn't matter to me) or a good Christian living/non-fiction book. It's up to y'all... let's read.... TOGETHER!

Mere Christianity (what we originally discussed)

What is that about?

I think I'll be down for it since I downloaded the Kindle App.

I haven't read it but I've heard that it's basically a Christian apologist book. It's a good book if you're wanting to defend the faith.

I'm not sure if Mere Christianity will work for me. Pros: its free. Cons: its written decades ago, which will make it a pretty tough read for me (in terms of the language and flow).

How about Celebration of Discipline by Richard J. Foster? It's considered one of the greatest books written on spiritual formation. I also like TJ's idea of Explicit Gospel.

I just read the reviews and summary on Celebration of Discipline. I think it'll make a great discussion book as it has a lot of points to debate and learn/grow from.

I'm down for either Celebration or Explicit Gospel. To cover a wider span, I'll also throw in a novel. I'm recommending In Greene Pastures by Kendra Norman Bellamy. She is a favorite author of Christian book clubs and a phenomenal writer. This book is the first in her Sheldon Height series (I think there are 4 or 5 of them in the series), and was a best seller with great reviews in Christian publications and among Christian audiences. I haven't read it but it appears to be a typical suspense novel (pastor was killed in a car accident, his daughter and her friend [probably a love interest plot] who owns the local newspaper try to get to the bottom of it, as the daughter suspects it wasn't an accident).

I'm also interested in both books you guys recommended. I'd like to read them both. Maybe we can do one after the other. I'm gonna add a poll to this thread and we'll vote on which to do first.
