« on: March 27, 2006, 03:01:36 PM »
Hey guys, I'm basically looking for more of a dark sound rather than bright.

At church we have a mapex set, and have aquairin heads (clear), we tune it above crinkle, and has a phat, dark deep sound, i've tried evans :(  to me no good, but when we put the aquairin, prayers were answered. 8)
Try different heads and look for the sound you what, do try one try them all until you find the right one!
God bless

Don't waste money. Go to the web sites and read the specs on the sound the different heads produce and then ask for specific models reviews from people instead of a bunch of unnecessary trial and error.

I must say that Aquarian has the warmest sound I have heard. I personally don't like them because they aren't made to tune up (higher tunings) ... they have a tendency to pop when you do ....

Not familier with that Mapex series. How old is it?

thanks for the response. I went and looked it up on Mapexdrums.com

9-ply basswood shells. I would say go with the Aquarians.

Just to add something....we have one of those kits here where I work. I wouldn't go with anything heavier than the response 2's. The other heavier heads just suffocate those drums. Studio-x, Response 2's or Double-thins (if you can find them) will do the trick with a texture coated on the snare. Yell back!
