Quick Help...3 days to pick a Bass
« on: May 09, 2005, 12:15:48 AM »
Okay, here's my first posting and I'm confident in asking since there are so many experienced bassists on this board.
I'm saving to buy a Ken Smith 5-string next year, but, in the mean time, I just sold my Conklin GT-5 and my only axe is a Rogue LX405B.  The Rogue does what I need and it's served me well as a back up, however, I'm ready to buy a new primary bass and I've narrowed my search to two (it only took me 2 months...lol).

1.  Rogue LX405 Pro.  See it at musicians friend.  Jazz pup at the neck, HB (musicman style) pup at the bridge.  Bass boost/cut, treble boost/cut, volume, and pup blend.  Active preamp with pull out defeater if battery dies or you want a passive sound.
2.  Yamaha BB405.  See it at musicians friend also.  Jazz single coils at neck and bridge.  two volume and one tone.  Completely passive.

I played the Yamaha at Guitar Center and I really liked the sound.  I was shocked b/c I was sure you needed an Active preamp to rock the gospel scene.  So, I'm torn between active and passive.
My question is this: Whick one does everyone think is best suited for gospel.  Our church band plays everything from traditional (COGIC) to contemporary (Michael W. Smith) to everything else (Martha, D. Lawrence, Israel, Third Day, Hezekiah, Donnie, Bishop Paul Morton)

If any one plays or has played either of these, please let me know what you think.

To be completely honest, I don't concern myself with active and passive decision making when buying a guitar. I buy based on sound, ease of use, and price. If you got the right rig (amp, eq, etc.) it won't matter what your guitar is laced with. That's just my personal opinion. But you will get different answers just because the question evokes a subjective response. If you like a warm and unadulterated sound then go passive, if you like a more hard course feel to your bass go active. It's pretty much just that simple.
I don't play bass, my bass plays me.

It really doesn't matter spend time and play both basses and pick the one that feels more natural to you hands, in the end that all that matters the sound can be change with a few mods.

Thanks for the advice Bacefingers and Blackgenius.  I'll be making my decision in a couple of days.  I appreciate the help.

something a very wise bass player who never steered me wrong from basses, strings, amps, pickups, preamps, to everything else once told me "DONT GET ANYTHING ACTIVE UNLESS IT HAS AT LEAST FIVE CONTROL KNOBS" those bass knobs are bass boost/cut mid boost/cut treble boost/cut pick up select and volume have that as a minimum of standard if u want a good bass. for everything u quoted and more try the lakland skyline 55-01 or 55-02 both are beautifully crafted the 02 is a higher model the have everything i said with active passive switch check it out on www.music123.com or www.musiciansfriend.com
