Question
« on: June 08, 2005, 04:17:26 PM »
This may seem like a silly question, but I have to ask it.

I have a music workshop coming up and I was thinking of giving the participants a copy (either on tape or on CD) of the songs we'll be learning in the workshop.

Do I actually have to obtain permission for that?  I've seen other people do it before, but I didn't know if I could just go ahead and do it, or do I have to go through the whole permission thing - and if I do have to do that, do I have enough time to get that permission??  Is the process very involved, do they allow you to copy for these purposes??

Just wondering if anyone knew.  What would you do if you were me?

Thanks!!

You suppose to go through the permission process so you won't get caught for "stealing"...I pretty much on the same boat as you are cause i have to put at least 8-10 songs to a church to have them learn...But I personally don't think it will hurt anybody since it's for a workshop purpose...how many copies you have to make??

NO you would not have to obtain permission from the orginal artist to do that. Since your just copying the song for a use of non-profit you would need permission to do that. BUT, the only way you would have to ask for granted permission is if you are trying the record the song in your own version and mass producing them. OR if your are trying to make money off of it. And it sounds like your not trying to do either or those so your safe.

I wouldn't know any sites to look at b/c I just have the books on it. I had to buy them to learn it for my church choir's recording. We had a 20 year reunion recording and recorded ALOT of prearranged and prewritten matrial. I could send them to you. Of course for a price. I know them like the back of a organ leslie now b/c thats all I used to read. But they are in less than mint condition. Get at me if you want them or need any insite on that type of info.

WOW!! That must have been an awesome experience!  To do that, did it cost anything?? (permission wise)?

P.S.  I appreciate the offer.  I would not cause you to part with your books, I trust you.  I will ask you what the main topic is called so I can search for it myself.
