should I listen 4 the root note in the chord?

Im trying to teach myself to recognise minor chords, should I try and pickout the root of the chord. I can tell whether a chord is maj/minor or diminished.

Something H-man taught me that cleared things up for me.  "Always" listen to the root because it will give you the progression.

I agree w/Hammondman.  The root note and the melody note.  The melody note is usually part of the chord.  If you figure out the root and the melody note, there's 2 notes of a 3 note basic triad chord right there   Did you get those head phones and crank up the volume?  :wink:

ok, how do u workout the melody note. If Im hearing a C7 chord, i should try and pick out the root which is C then what would the melody note be.
