Problem with 4 String
« on: November 07, 2005, 09:13:41 AM »
Well, I found my first problem (well, not really a problem, but isse) with a four string bass.  I was trying to transcribe a bass line from a CD and the first note was Eb (I kinda cheated and found it on the piano first).

When I went to find it on my 4 string, I discovered that the actually pitch wasnt on the bass, it was deeper.  Uuggghh.....

Oh the joy!

LOL

[edit]

Seems you need to buy yourself a 5 string.....but then you'll try to play a Bb....

Now, if you had an 8-string, you wouldn't have to worry about hitting bottom!

LOL....

I play 4 string too and that Eb plagued me also.  I looked at it as a challenge to learn to play it with the higher octave, which is good for learning fingerings, but it just doesn't sound the same.  This too has forced me to desire that B string.

my problem is simular, I discovered that my deepest D is open D which is the same idea as you were just saying Eb/D# samething.

Open D is the 2nd highest string of a four string and it is my deepest  8O

I'd like a 5. we play a song called Ancient of Days in D and a 4 string does not do it justice. I'm in the market for a 5 and I think I have settled on Ibanez sr505.

I was going to say drop D tuning which turns the E into a D.

4hisglory. I assume you are talking about my comment the open D is the deepest D on a 4 string EADG.

The 5th fret on the A string same octave as open D, 10th fret on the E string same octave as D on the A string and open D.

I'm confident in this conclusion but if someone has a different way of me thinking about what I just said I'm all ears..........

Why don't you try tuning your bass down a 1/2 step.  Guitar players do this all the time.  then Eb would be right there.

I am a purest. :)    For some reason, I just believe in 4 strings regularly tuned (this may change one day).  I dont care for 8 string bass guitars either. :D

I have a 5-string with a standard B.  Some songs go lower than my B.  If I know ahead of time that that song is coming I just tune down the B string temporarily.  I used to tune a guitar down 1/2, like Hendrix, SRV-ish.  After a couple of years, I decided to go back to standard tuning and learn how to handle my instrument.  And that's still ongoing.

Tony

I'm against an 8-string also.  But I'm not going to say anything because I am liable to find myself with one.  B3, did I say that out loud?

If you define a purity as EADG then you will never find your Eb it's hidden below the nut.   :D

I have the same problem. You guys say to tune differently so if I dont tune EADG how should I tune the 4 strings.
