Hands down
« Reply #41 on: February 07, 2006, 01:42:51 AM »
I must say hands down it's Verdine White. Almost 35 years in the making with multiple number one hits on nothing but a 4 string and imagination. I just bought his instructional video and he's still on a basic four string bass. No extra notes with a five or six-string baby!! He is so bad that even George Benson (for you jazz enthusiasist) gave him a custom bass. To make it even better, no two songs sounded the same bass-wise either. Can any of you hit the first two measures of "Getaway" flawlessly?
With that being said I guess my number two tie (if there was any after Verdine) would be Tommy Jenkins from 80's Cameo (heavy bass grooves to revive a struggling band) or Louis Johnson from the Brothers' Johnson. I know you are disagreeing but find me a song prior to their 1980's hit "Stomp" that showcased the slap and pop technique so flawlessly?

First of. im proud to see that some of my personal friends from my city (toledo ohio) made the list on here.
James Jones is a monster on everything he plays.
Tim Collins has a nice laid back feel.
Gordon Henry. He plays for Rance Allen and you can hear him on most of Chris Byrd and true Victory CD's (James Jones....the first guy mentioned can be heard playin the Keys on these CD's) . Gordon is definately the man with the gospel scene here in toledo.

Im really diggin Darrell Freeman. He's playin on Marvin Sapps latest stuff. He played on Marvins DVD and I saw him playin on Glenn lewis dvd also. He plays alot with Kevin Bond.

Debra Killings has a nice DVD also. Shes a Beast on bass. I dont think ive ever seen a woman hold it down as well as she does.

Gouche....we cant forget about him.
Joel Smith.........u must hear Kim Burrell's Everlasting life CD.

OMG.... i almost forgot about Rapheal Saadiq His Old p-bass sounds like no other.

John Patitucci is also the man who by the way IS a christian.

Theres sooo many more but these are the ones who influence me and my playin..........Bye the way....Im James Bowens and im sure that some day someone will be puttin my name on here.......in Jesus name....he he

DJ,

You're a man after my own heart dude.

DJ said "I'll let you know.  Once my name name makes someones list. "

My feeling exactly...nailed it on the head.  Amen brother...I love listening to all those guys but nothing sounds better than when a miracle comes from my own fingers. :D

DJ I know we can hang now...we're going to grow bro...big time.

Its all about the young guys as far as im concerned outside of Andrew Gooche, and Joel Smith in GOSPEL its all about the young guns such as:

Myself (Tim Williams): Milwaukee, Wi
Dwayne Wright: New York, NY
Adam Johnson: Baltimore, Ma
Kenny Diggs: Louisville, Ky
Justin Rains: Pittsburg, Pa
Damian Farmer: Chicago,IL
Tony Russell: Chicago,IL
Lil Rodney: Chicago,IL
Lil Donald: Chicago,IL
Craig: Chicago,IL
& Swol: Chicago,IL

I stopped shedding stuff I cant use on gigs, so the jaco, and vic stuff is cool. But I cant use that when Im on stage with Keyshia Cole, so why shed it? For my own amusement? When I listen to these other young guys in my class, they always modivate me in some way. Yall should really check them out, you can find every bassist I listed on plenty of sessions. Im sure they will fill you up, as they have done me.

Holla @cha Boi,
Tim "Rawbiz" Williams
