Bass Players
« on: March 13, 2006, 05:23:17 PM »
Hey everyone,
I have a question, why do some bass players put a scrungy around the bass.  I really can't exlain it.  Women wear this to put there hair in a pony tail.  Hope you understand what I'm trying to say.  Thanks!!

You tend to see this most on extended range basses (basses with 5 or more strings).  The reason is that the B string, which is common on extended range basses, tends to be more resonant than the other strings and more prone to accidental vibration.  If you have a bass with a low B string, plug it into your amp and just gently shake the bass.  More than likely you will hear the B string rumble.  The scrunchy suppresses that rumble.

Peace,

James

It really helps, yea it looks silly but there is good reason for it. I perfer using a guitarist capo on the other side of the nut to mute the string, oh this is for a 4 string.

I usually use my "scrunchy" for a muted effect.  I use it when I use my hand as well.  Also, since my bass is named after my wife, my bass needed a hair piece as well. ;D ;D ;D
