1. Reconstruction
d. This is the period where America rebuilt all the destroyed American towns and cities after the Civil War   
   s. This, being the first time blacks were freed, was a cause of lots of racial tension
2. Two major problems
   d. there were many problems that arose during, two of the worst were
s. Reaccepting seceded states into the union, as well as integrating blacks into society.
3. 10%
   d. 10 out of 100
s. when 10% of those voting in 1860 take a loyalty oath, you can set up a state government.
4. Wade-Davis Bill
d. created by radical republicans who wanted to make readmitance into the union difficult
s.  when a majority of those voting took a loyalty vote, then they could be readmitted.
5. Radical Republicans
   d. back then, they were sort of like super liberals
   s. today, its mostly pat Robertson and Nazis being haters.
6. John Wilkes Booth
d. conspirator of an assassination of the president, vice president, and secretary of war.
   s. successfully killed the president.
7. “sic semper tyranis”
   d. this is the latin phrase placed on the Virginian flag.
   s. yelled when Abraham Lincoln
8. similarities btn the Lincoln & Kennedy assassinations
   d. eerie similarities exist between the assassinations of Lincoln and Kennedy.
s. Lincoln’s secretary named Kennedy, Kennedy’s secretary’s name was Lincoln.  Lee Harvey Oswald shot Kennedy from a warehouse and ran to a theater.  Booth killed Lincoln in a theater and ran to a warehouse.
9. 13th amendment
   d. This amendment preceded the 14th, and came after the twelfth.
   s. This amendment freed slaves.
10. 14th amendment
   d. Reversed the Dred Scott Decision.
s. All persons born in us are citizens.  No state can deprive a person of  their basic rights.  Equal protection clause used later.
11. 15th amendment
   d. this is the good one.
s. right to vote cannot be denied on the count of race, color or previous condition of servitude.
12. Tenure of Office Act
   d. this states that president needs approval of congress to dismiss a cabinet.
s. Johnson believes it is unconstitutional and dismisses the secretary of war Staunton.
13. Impeachment of Andrew Johnson
d. Johnson had infuriated the radical republicans by dismissing Staunton and not supporting civil rights.
s. majority of votes in house impeach, 2/3 in senate will remove him
14. Freedmen’s Bureau
   d. a branch of the war department designed to help ex-slaves and poor whites
   s. provided food clothing, medical care and schools
16. Virginia state flag changes
   d. after the civil war, the state flag of Virginia is changed
   s. spear pointing down in defeat, left breast uncovered to humiliate.
17. Black Codes
   d. Laws designed to regulate the social and economic lives of freed blacks
   s. limited right to bear arms, accuse whites in court, marry whites,.
18. Ku Klux Klan
   d. based off greek kluklos for circle. Group of southern white supremacists
   s. used fear and intimidation to keep blacks out of politics.
19. W.A.S.P.
   d. white Anglo-Saxon protestant
   s. they should add an ah for
20. Carpetbaggers
   d. people who moved from north to south
   s. some were to help the poor, some were to take advantage of the black vote.
21. scalawags
   d. this is pirate speak for scoundrel.
   s. southerners who joined the republican party to control the black vote.
22. sharecropping system
d. system where the planter rents out land to workers who work the land, and in payment receive half of the crop.
s. They didn’t have money and this paid out of work blacks (usually) by landowners with tools, but no labor source.
23. crop-lien system
d. Merchants extended the planter credit for supplies in exchange for mortgage of crops.
   s. used during reconstruction because of lack of money
24. Election of 1872
   d. Grant wins against Horace Greeley
   s. Grant wins with the help of 500,000 enfranchised blacks
25. Grant’s administrations
   d. grants admin was marred with scandals
   s. marred means marked.
26. Election of 1876
   d. 185 electoral votes wins
s. with 3 states left, tilden (d) 184, and  Hayes (r) 165, compromise made, hayes wins with 185 votes.

27. Compromise of 1877
   d. Hayes is winner, and other things happen.
s. troops removed from remaining states. Internal improvement in place for south.  Southerners in cabinet.
28. Andersonville
   d. confederate prison
   s. 32,000 confederates died, 1864
29. Henry Wirz
   d. man in charge of the prison
   s. hung for war crimes.
30. Jim Crow Laws
   d. je dure segregation
   s. state laws created that established segregation in public facilities.
31. Plessy v. Ferguson
   d. 1896, created “separate but equal”
   s. upheld jim crow laws.
32. Black politicians during Reconstruction
   d. 2 senators, 14 reps in house,
   s. South Carolina majority. PBS Pinchback first governor.
33. Hiram Revels
   d. us senator.
   s. um that’s all it really says about him.
34. Impact of The Civil War & Reconstruction on the South
d. south left devastated embittered and remained a poor agricultural region for decades.
s. Farms, railroads factories and cities lay in ruins.
35. Impact of The Civil War & Reconstruction on the North
   d. strong and growing economies
   s. industrial expansion continues as us leads world by turn of the century
36. The “Solid South”
   d. for 100 years the south voted democrat
   s. now they are pretty solid republican
37. transcontinental R.R.
   d. westward movement
   s. develops area from the Mississippi  river to the pacific
38. Homestead Act
   d. helped change prairie into farms towns and ranches
   s. was created in order to settle in the west.
39. The long drive
   d. movement of cattle from the open range to r.r. towns and eastern cities.
   s. this was a large part of the industrial America.
