SOME MUSIC THEORY DEFINITIONS

just some Music Theory Definitions to aid in concept development and execution.

A CAPPELA
Without instrumental accompaniment.

CHOIR
An organized company of singers, especially in church service.

COVER
Remake of a song.

CRESCENDO
A gradual increase in volume.

CROSSOVER MUSIC
Music that is played in a variety of formats/styles.

DECRESENDO
A gradual decrease in volume.

DYNAMICS
Variation in intensity of musical sound.

GENRE
A kind; sort; type.

GOSPEL
Good News; of or pertaining to the teaching of Jesus Christ; Contemporary living or happening in the same period of time;

HARMONY
The simulations combining notes in a chord.

INVERSION
Vocally speaking, changing or flipping the position of the vocal chord/parts (Sop., Alto, Ten.), up or down within the same key.

MODULATION
The process of changing from one key to another within a composition.

MUSIC

From the Greek word:  Sumphonia; the art of combining sounds or sequences of notes in harmonious patterns pleasing to the ear and satisfying to the emotions.

MUSICIANSHIP
Skill, insight, and artistry in the performance of music.

OCTAVE
The eighth note above a given pitch.

PITCH
To set in a particular key (tone on a scale).

RHYTHM
The term which denotes the organization of sound in time; the temporal quality of sound.

SECULAR
Of or belonging to the world or worldly things as distinguished from the church and religious affairs; not sacred or religious; temporal.

STYLE
Distinction, excellence, originality and character in any form of artistic or literally expression within a historical period, a cultural tradition or of an individual artist.

TEMPO
The rate of speed of a musical work.

TIMBRE
The quality of sound that distinguishes it from other sounds of the same pitch and volume.

TONE
Musical note, characteristics quality of a particular instrument or voice.

UNISON
Singing or playing in the same notes by all singers or players, either at exactly the same pitch or in a different octave.

VIBRATO
A slightly tremulous effect imparted to vocal or instrumental tone, for warmth and color.

VOICE
Musical sound produced by the vocal chords and resonated by the cavities of the head and throat.
