Switching to the Sax
« on: March 07, 2006, 11:28:52 PM »
Hey I've been playing the clarinet for about 10 yrs and I want to try to learn other wind instruments beginning with the sax. Since they're both reed instruments I don't think that the change will be that hard but I just wanted to know ppls opinion. How long do you think it will take me to adapt to the sax being that I have a strong background playing the clarinet? Does anyone play both the clarinet and the sax and see major changes between both instruments?

You shouldn't have a problem.  Of course, the notes are different.  In fact, it will be easier because you don't have to worry about covering holes.  All you would have to do is press keys. :)  Yes, the embochure is a little different.  On the sax, don't put all the mouthpiece in your mouth.  Hope this helps.

Sax is probably the easiest of the reed instruments to play and adapt to.  Have fun....you will LOVE it!!!!

It's easy if you apply the necessary skills and fundamental theory to the God given talent you already posess.
