i luved the bass sound since Jr. High while playing bass clarinet ... when my former husband started to pick-up bass playing again, it sparked my interest.

growing up, my home church  basic setup was a piano and hand claps (no foot stomps because we had carpet). drums were adds years later. then one day i guy came in with a bass guitar and it was just different, he was the only musician standing up so that drew my attention.  i remember like it was yesterday (but it was at least 25 yrs ago) they were playing the song "O happy day" and you could just feel the bass. that one day had a lasting impression on me but didn't pick up the bass for myself until about 10yrs later.

In my Hometown of Kinston, NC there were Bands everywhere.  My boy Boo-Boo Wiggins and I started a band before our teens.
My friend P.C played bass for my Uncle's group and He inspired me.  Paul Isler help me in my teens win the bass contest at school with " School Dazes" by Stanley Clarke. He played with alot of groups in the 90's.

Peace

This might be dating myself, and perhaps even sound a little corny, but the first time I heard Pops Staples play his bassline in "I'll Take You There", I wanted to play bass...

My father played for many year before I was born, I've never seen him play. When I was 19 I bought him a bass and amp (6 years ago). I never played it, then when I was 23 I bought one for myself. Started real slow. Here I am now. I am the only musician that stands...  :)

In Aug. of 99 the 2 bass player at my church left( school and military) and we didn't have a bass player and I just picked it up and had someone teach me a bassline and the rest is history.

Listening to John P. Kee's early music.  I don't care what nobody says, back in the day John was the man.  His bass player was killin it on every song.

I gave my life to the Lord in April of 2005, and wanted to make a joyful noise unto the the Lord, so picked up a bass in July of 2005. And this site inspires me somehow to keep on.

About 3 or 4 years ago during our jurisdictional AIM convention Timothy Wright and his 3 sons came and did a concert. The whole time I was at the concert I was watching Dwayne Wright play and I was in shock! I always liked the bass, but after Dwayne got through murden that bass, my passion for the bass sky rocketed to a whole new level.  Plus my church didn't have a bass player.

I know exactly what you mean...that bass line is the only bass line I play when I'm going to try out guitars....lol I tell you it shuts a whole lot of guys down when they hear hit because what they're doing is just patting on the strings instead of playing em..   BTW...how do you get that sound out of a bass?  That in between notes, rhythem type of sound bass players do all the time? (I hope you know what I mean?)

Prody ... do you mean the muting???

you could use either a left or right hand technique for that

Left hand:  use your pointing finger to sound your notes while the rest of your fingers slightly lay on the strings
right hand:  use your thumb to sound your notes while resting the side of your hand (side where pinky is) to rest against the strings slightly

in addition, i believe (don't quote me on this one) using a pick on bass gives it a different sound as well

that's must be it....muting the strings because I seen a guy the last time I was at the Guitar Center, with his whole hand laying flat against the strings, but I couldn't see exactly all he was doing to get that percussion type sound out. :-\

I WAS ALWAYS AROUND MUSIC SINCE IWAS BORN. SO EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE I WOULD GET A CHANCE TO MESS AROUND WITH THE BASS. I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED THE BASS BUT I WAS ALWAYS PUSHED INTO PLAYING THE DRUMS. NOW I'M BEING PUSHED TO PLAY THE ORGAN. I BOUGHT A BASS LIKE A YEAR AGO. BUT NOW IM SERIOUS ABOUT IT.
