Every key? Seriously....EVERY KEY?!?!

I've heard some players say that every song, riff or lick they learn, they learn it in EVERY KEY.

How many of you actually do this?

I'm VERY guilt of learning all riffs, changes, and chords in every key. I got to do this. The organ can't transpos for ya.

You just really have to force yourself to practice that way and eventually it will become easier like everything else in music that you practice with. Your chord vocabulary will grow a lot too. But it takes practice and comes in handy when you get people who claim they sing a song better in B than Bb when in actually they just want to be picky. Be blessed!

I used to learn everything I did (chords, riffs, and runs) in every key, now I'm getting lazy I just know the chords in every key.  I play the organ I have to play in every key.

I "try" to practice everything in ever key.  After doing it for a few months, it becomes alot easier, you just have to stick in there.

One of the big advantages I've see is you can steal chords from anyone by looking over there shoulder.  and if they are a transposer, u can find out what key they play in and play in a DIFFERENT key to frustrate them.

Doc, I feel you on this one! I fall in the same boat you do. I have forgotten more than some people know.It is just being LAZY, but also I am teaching other beginning musicians the basics and it is hard to practice for yourself when I am teaching.  Bishop Cole

Ok guys, as I've said about 100 times already, I've only been playing since the beginning of the year.  I only know how to play in 3 keys: C, Db, and Eb. 

My teacher told me that, when learning a new key, I should play the scale for the key over and over, while calling out the scale degrees (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, repeat) for a while before I begin.  What other exercises would help?

I was never one to learn every song in every key. I usually have my head in a psychology or calculus book, so I don't have time to do that. What I do is learn a song in the original key, but learn it well enough so that I can mentally transpose on the spot into whatever key I need to play in.

on the thread what i am learning is that as soon as you learn something

before before
before before

no i aint stutterring

before you get comfortable with the new lick or chord play it maybe four times tops then transpose it
four times in the new key then transposae again

this way you dont get attached to it in any key yoou can just play it all over

i just learned this from doing pischna and it really works

pick one key a month.   

play all modes of the dominant scales

play the chromatic

play the whole tone and dim chord off the fifth.

play common chords in each key and say the name of the chord as you play them

don't overwhelm yourself, learn a lick or in each key. 

when you're done with that, then start over. 

it will expand your ear

I knew a lady who is very good
and she would play a little saturday service and she would do all her experimenting at that church She would always play in her unfamiliar keys and try things that she wouldnt do at her main sunday gig

This I thought was a very good approach the only way to get famioliar with the unfamiliar is to get familiar with them

I have not learned everything I do in every key although I can get around in everykey. You will get left behind if you dont. Or you will be embarassed one day during a service when guests come. You can try the one key a month I kinda prefer when I do practice LOL to go though everykey. It takes a long time that why I try what diverse said and do the samething a few times and change key. You will be surprise at how fast you learn your keys in a months time.

if you get in the habit of transposing as soon as you learn something you will not get that comfortability that prevents you from venturing outside your favorite key


not only does this method facilitate learning in new keys it trains your fingers to do the movements necessary to play what ever you are playing because usually you will still be using the same fingers

not to mention that when you do this method you own whatever you are learning

It is best to start this with the new chords the new little runs etc

so when you have to do a song you will know to take each little phrase up
The keys

if you were learning amazing grace

take amazing grace and play those two or three chords all over the keyboard

then play how sweet the sound and play that all over the keyboard

it may seem like it is longer but its not really

you would sit in that same key trying to perfect it and when you dd you wouldnt want to go into anyother keys because you wouldnt own it


when you franspose you own it because you under stand what is happening
