The Reading Question... Help
« on: April 20, 2006, 08:36:25 PM »
I believe learning how to read music (drums) will take my playing to another level. However, is reading music too extensive to teach myself? I mean, I am a quick learner but will I be able to just pick up some books, study my craft and practice, and teach myself how to read? SabianKnight and others please give me ur opinions...

This question comes up repeatedly through search of advancement or guilt for slacking. Either way, here are some resorces that everyone can utilize.

You can teach yourself to read music/drum charts with a good metronome and the right books:

Dr. Beat DB-60 or DB-90 , Tama Rhythm Watch, Yamaha ClickStation metronomes

Berklee Press - The Reading Drummer
Basix - Syncopation for Drums
Podimsky - Snare Drum Method

Count out loud in rhythm while listening to the subdivisions of the metronome (music is math folks truth be told... so get a good understanding of the values of the note space)

Practice Reading everyday

Practice Transcribing your own playing as well as the records you listen to:
*** This is how you get  full understanding (I am yet to do this one though... I do my own grooves but I haven't done a full song)

Read the exercises and transcriptions in Modern Drummer etc

Thanks for the info!
I was wondering which metronome do you recomend?
There have several that I have seen mentioned on this
list, but not sure which one is best for the money.
Yell back, I need advice from someone who has experience
with using clicks or metronomes.

The ones I recommened arethe best for the money. Look up the models and prices. It really is up to you how much you can invest at the time of purchase. My top recommendation would be the Dr. beat DB-90 followed by the DB-60 because of the options.

The DB-90 can sync with sequencers and loops via a midi cord and triggered by an optional foot switch so that makes it super versatile.
