$1000 what bass would you buy?
« on: June 09, 2006, 08:29:25 AM »
ok, so my church is going to purchase a new bass, they don't want to spend over $1000, which is cool for me. I currently have a Yamaha 5 string, passive, low end. I am still looking for something with a sweet jazzy tone but not too brite of a sound, but not too deep either. that's the problem I'm havn with my current bass. I guess I am somewhat partial to the yamaha trb series, but I am re ally looking at the ibanez. I'm really not sure. I'm playing gospel/jazz and really want something that's going to let me do some poping and slappn but also sound good when I'm thumbing... any suggestions are much appreciated. God bless!

The Geddy Lee fender Jazz Bass is the bargain. For sound and versatality you can't go wrong. And the price between $600 and $700 easy. Jazz bass with a thinner neck. Really nice bass. I own a range of basses P's, Jazz and an Ibenez. I'm old school. Only four strings.  That is good stewardship. That is for passive. If you want active try any of the Ibenez basses there is a great line under $600. All quality. You don't have to spend big bucks for great bass. Blessings and if you need help pray and ask the Lord where you have Peace you will have your answer.

I would go with a fender or even specter legend.  My boy who is sponsored by them, has some legends and they sound great.

I would assume he is refering to the Ken Smith that copies the Marcus Miller Fender that can be had new for about $750.

As for the topic in question, I like Ibanez as well (own a 4string about to get a 5), here are my suggestion. I am confident that these basses will cover your every need and more.

Great picks, I was about to purchase the SR905 before I purchased my schecter.  I like the tone that it produced.  Nice crisp highs, with deep bottom if played through the correct cabs.

Mr Bassics......WELCOME TO LGM !!!!!

At $1,000 I'd be sweeping the used market, specifically looking for.....

  • Music Man Bongo
  • Lakland 55-02
  • Peavey Cirrus
  • Fender Marcus Miller
  • Fender Geddy Lee
  • There are a number of Yamaha and Ibanez basses I'd also consider

Peace,

James

Two members have already suggested Laklands. A new 55-01 is $700. A great bass for sure. A used 55-02 would be around $1000. Either one would be a big step up with lots of tone shaping capabilities.

I have two Lakland four stringers and love them.

You're on the right track with Ibanez. I bought an Ibanez Soundgear 6-string and I absolutely love it. Ibanez has some great tones and they're easy and comfortable to play.

1) American Fender Jazz  (4 or 5 string)
2) Peavey Cirrus (5string)
3) Warwick Corvette (4 or 5string)   ** A little heavier than others****

I personally love my American Fender Jazz Deluxe, even more than my Warwick FNA Jazzman, because of the Fender tone and versatility. A lot of people are sleeping on the Peavey Cirrus, but if you can find one try it out. You may end up buying it. Most importantly, just pick whats best and feels best to you b/c you have to play it and grow with it.

I'm in a similar situation. I'm saving up about 1500. 00 to get a Lakland 55-02 Deluxe (used).

BTW it's pronounced with a long A, as in Lakeland. I found this out on their website.

$1,500 is more than they go for new.  You should be able to get a used 55-02 for no more than $850.

You're absolutely right malthumb. I should have said I'm saving up to 1500.00 and I'll get something used if it's nice, or new and pick the finish I want, up to my limit. Any way your posts are always informative and I appreciate your willingness to share your wisdom.

Ibanez has a great sound and the neck feels good.
Yamaha has a good sound and the neck feels good too.
Tobias has a great sound and a very wide range, the neck feels wonderful.
