Good suggestion. Long tones are always good. I also recommend matching overtones. It's simple. Finger low Bb but try to maka a Bb an octave higher come out. Once you get this out, match the overtone to a regular Bb. (The third line of the staff.) Go back and finger low Bb and make an F come out. (Top line of the staff.) Match this to the normal fingering for F. Finger low Bb and make a high Bb come out. (Bb above the staff.) Match the normal fingering. This can be done on all of the low notes: Bb, B natural, C, C#, and D. This will help you play with a bigger sound. In addition, it will teach you how the throat should feel when playing in all registers. It will improve intonation, and, finally it will start you on the way to playing in the altissimo register.
