which bottom head should I use for my snare?
« on: June 21, 2006, 08:49:29 AM »
What up fam, I have a steel piccolo (14x3.5) and I'm wanting to know which bottom head should I use between clear ambassador and clear diplomat?  Which one will give me the crack and pop?  I'm using Coated Ambassador on top....thanks in advance and PLEASE respond  ;D

I am not a Remo guy, but the Hazy Ambassador (snare side head) would give you a more Open Warm sound. Might not quite be what you are looking for on a piccolo. The Hazy Diplomat would be more neutral to the point that it would be affected by your tuning. then it comes down to this, the ambassador is 1 mil thicker than the diplomat, so take that to consideration. You will give up some of your pop with the ambassador, but the feel will be nice.

Hope that helped.

God Bless.

Thanks my brutha, that did help.  So you think the Diplomat would be the best way to go for the sound I'm looking for?

Thats what I would suggest. the thinner the head, the more pop and brightness. for example, I switched my Evans 3mil head for a 5mil, and it really warmed up my snare...so when you go the other way, it gets brighter.

Thanks ER.  I do have Evans heads on another one of my snares, but it's not completely tuned up yet.

The Diplomat will give more pop and sensitivity but it will probably mwke the drum sound "thin" and tnny.

Diplomat and Hazy 200 are very similar. If you want more articulation and sensitivity you use thinner heads. If you want pop/focus then an Ambassador or Hazy 300 may be better. If you want a bigger, phatter sound then even a Hazy 500 Glass may be the ticket - Though the glas WILL NOT give you sensitivity of low volume.

Thats what I was basing my comparison off of. Diplomat to Hazy 200 and Ambassador to hazy 300.

In fact I just happen to be a remo guy. So you already know I'd go with a simple clear ambassador.

You want pop go with the ambassador ! The diplomat head is really for orchestral use and will make your drum more sensitive but ws less pop. Ive used it before and went back to ambassador because of it.

Yeah I use to see Jeremy at my church alot  and he would swear by that emperor x head. i tried it myself and that head is killing on my 12x7 snare. i thought it would only sound good on beefier snares but it work out just fine. i luv it !!!!!!
