I'm glad to see you back my brother.

What i'd like to know is how do you approach the fretboard?  Do you think of modes/scales, or do you do more of the play what you "feel is right"
Somebody put me in the key of E#

Hey My Brother

Welcome to the forum, glad to have you or should I say excited to have you here. I have so many questions I don't know where to start. I guess like the others, how do you approach the fretboard ? Where is your main focus modes, scales, or just what feels right.

Peace

Welcome to LGM!!!!!

First off, I'd like to appologize for the clips I posted of me murdering one of your songs a few weeks ago  ;D
Second, thanks for returning to the forums.

If you don't mind my asking, what peice of advice would you offer to your fellow bass players as "the most important thing to remember/keep in mind while playing is _______" (from a spiritual and musical perspective).

Thanks!

God Bless,
-J

Everybody in this forum is happy to have you here and I can say that without a doubt.  I think I am happier then anyone else on here, because it was hearing you play on L.A. Mass' album that got me started "Every knee shall bow" When I heard that I was like I got to praise God through that instrument. And then My choir eventually sang that song.  You should have been here about a 6 or 7 months ago(lol). Cant wait to pick your brain.  Thanks to you and everyone on this site and forum.

Lemme just tell you a little about myself. I started playing bass in 1974 when I got a bass for Christmas. I was singing in the choir at Rev. James Cleveland's church, and he used to let me sit on the side and try to figure out the songs. I realized early on that God had given me the gift to play bass. I'm am totally self taught, so I probably did alot of things that were not by the book! I came up in a time when most churches did'nt even see a need for bass because the organists would play bass on the pedals, (Many still do!). A lot of people ask me about scales and theory, but to tell you the truth, I don't know the technical terms for 99% of the stuff I do. Understand, when I was coming up, the only other bass player that I knew about was Joel Smith (My favourite player). There were no standards for playing in church, so basically I set my own standard, which after a while began to get the attention of a lot of artists. At one point, I was playing with James Cleveland, The Winans, Andrae Crouch, The Hawkins Family, and the Jazz Crusaders at the same time. The luxury that up and coming players today have, is having all these great players to listen to, Like Terrance Palmer, Maurice, Joel, Reggie Young etc. One thing that I can say is that I NEVER wanted to sound like anyone else, that does'nt mean that I don't listen to anyone else, I love all the guys that I mentioned before and a few others like Marcus, Victor, and Robert Wilson of The Gap Band, check him out! To the question of getting around my fretboard, I used to learn a song, then play it in every key and in every position on my bass. For instance, if it's in E, then find every E on the neck, and play the song. To the question of the Bass Off, I'm not exactly sure how that works, so I'm gonna leave that alone, but if you let me know of some things that you'd like to hear examples of, I'll post them. Peace.......

Hey Yogooche, I was wondering what would it take for us to get you to come out and do a bass workshop for us in Louisiana. We recently had Maurice Fitzgerald come out to Baton Rouge, LA and do one about 3months ago, we had Nathan East about a year ago, and we had a couple other big name bassists do the workshops for us at our music store. If you would be interested, we could contact your manager and set everything up according to your schedule, traveling arrangements and of course compensation. I know you are really in demand, but maybe we coud get it like 6-10 months from now?? Just a thought b/c us southern bassists are trying to step out game up, and a workshop with you would help tremendously. If interested send me and IM, but keep up the good work for now
