So you want to play in every key? 1-4-5 Progression
« on: September 08, 2006, 12:38:07 AM »
This will help those who really want to progress in their learning of the piano/keyboard. If you want to learn to play in every key you must start out small. If you break down anything you learn into little pieces and play them in every key you will be playing in every key sooner than you think.

We all know music is made of progressions and one of the simplest progressions is the 1-4-5 progression. I have a midi of the the beginning the the song Lord I Lift Your Name on High. If you can play these simple 1-4-5 chords in the root positions you will be able to play this in every key.
You start out in the key of C. If you do not know all your major scales and what note is which degree, you will not understand what is going on. Its best after you have read this to type out the notes of the chords and learn their names.

Key of C
C maj, F maj, G maj

Key of Db
Db maj, Gb maj, Ab maj

Key of D
D maj, G maj, A maj

Key of Eb
Eb maj, Ab maj,  Bb maj

Key of E
E maj, A maj, B maj

Key of F
F maj, Bb maj, C maj

Key of Gb
Gb maj, B maj, Db maj

Key of G
G maj, C maj, D maj

Key of Ab
Ab maj, Db maj, Eb maj

Key of A
A maj, D maj, E maj

Key of Bb
Bb maj, Eb maj, F maj

Key of B
B maj, E maj, Gb maj

The key is to keep things simple. I know you may here people do phat chords and you want to do them also but you can be just as effective playing small chords. You can make a song sound full with small chords if you know how to voice and place them in the music.

Remember phat chords are basically two or more small chords put togther.
