I would suggest checking out http://www.vicfirth.com/education/studcenterdrumset.html There is a lot of useful information on that site. I would stress the importance of learning good time and working on rudiments. Rudiments are like the scales of drumming. You can find some other sites that have free online lessons either with videos or drumtabs or sheetmusic. Let me know how you make out.

THIS IS A VERY GOOD SUGGESTION B/C HE WOULD LEARN HOW TO PLAY ALONG WITH  A CLICK TRACK. AND THIS IS A VERY NEEDED SKILL FOR DRUMMERS NOW. I KNOW SOOOO MANY DRUMMERS THAT CAN PLAY YOU INTO A COMA. BUT AS SOON AS YOU TURN ON THAT MPC THERE FINISHED.

AND ALSO, SUGGEST TO THE DRUMMER TO WORK ON DEVLOPING HIS OWN STYLE. EVAN IF THAT MEANS PLAYING A WHOLE SONG INSIDE THE POCKET. THAT IS ANOTHER SKILL THAT ALOT OF DRUMMERS CAN'T GET WITH. BUT IF YOU'VE NOTICE THE DRUMMERS THAT DO STAY INSIDE THE POCKET ARE COMING UP OR THEIR ALREADY UP. (?uestlove, Brian Kendricks, Joel Smith, The Drummer for Prince I Forgot His Name.)

AND THE LAST THING THAT I WOULD SAY IS TO PRATICE HIS WAY AROUND THE KIT. SO THAT MEANS, NOT ALSO PLAYING THE FULL KIT. TELL HIM TO BREAK IT DOWN JUST TO A SNARE, HI-HAT AND, KICK. AND BUILD OFF OF THAT.

I HOPE THIS HELPS.
