I have to say Reggie Young is my favorite right now.  I mean, the kat is  SERIOUS.  He's a techinical/groove guy.  But some other favorites are:

Jaco
Pino Palladino
Vic
Verdine White
Raphael Saadiq holds a serious groove too!  maybe the least technical player mentioned on this board but far from the least talented.
Jamerson
Victor Bailey
Andre Gouche is holding it down on the Gospel side of things too. Seeing Badu's bassist was the straw that made me finally get up and buy a bass, so thank God for him.  Never knew his name tho.

two of the best kats in gospel is maurice fitzgerald and terrance palmer.
Maurice just holds the bottom and plays with perfection. He can adapt to any style, that's what's so awesome about him.
Terrance has been in the game for a long while, he just blew up again with Isreal. remember he played with Fred back in the early 90's.

my favorites Abe Laboriel and Marcus Miller

as far as new bass players that are rapidly rising in my book Terry Tribbett and Adam Blackstone.  Adam's playing for Jill right now.  Terry's going to be one of the greatest.
