Your Attention Please
« on: December 04, 2006, 09:48:57 AM »
I'm a beginner at the keyboard with only about 10mos. under my belt. People tell me i'm moving to fast because i'm wanting to buy  nd learn how to play the bass. I know my hearts desire and really don't care people tell me. My question to the pros is, which bass is suitable for a beginner, with a deep rich sound? I've heard Ibanez, Peavey, Fender, were the best out there.  My budget is at around $500. I need your opinions.

Thank You and God Bless

P.S. Does the size of the strings make a difference. The bigger the string, the deeper the bass. Is that how that works.

$500 will get you a nice entry level, pro instrument. Try all the brands you mentioned. Out of those brands, I think Peavey offers the most bang for your bucks! You can get a nice Peavey Millenium BXP for -$300. But see which one feels comfortable to and go with that one.

The size of the strings just determines how it will be tuned but Bass strings are Bass strings. Bass strings are thicker (and longer) than guitar strings.

I would look at used equipment.  They sell for about half of their new value and there's not a lot that tends to go wrong with basses, for awhile at least (and I don't think you're in the vintage market).  Find a reputable music store in your area with a good selection of used equipment and try several out.  If they don't have used stuff, try the new ones to see which brands seem to play the best for you.  Other brands that I've seen that sell in your range are G&L and even some of the used Lakland Skyline series.  The Japanese Fenders are pretty nice also.  If you have questions, come on back.  As you've seen already, there are many knowledgeable people here to help out.

Good luck
