I echo you on that one. I am a vocal instructor by profession and singing vowels is one of the most important lessons that I stress to my students. Keep that air flowing, commit to the vowels, and your sound will greatly improve. It may be a bit airy, shakey, or inconsistent if the voice is not well conditioned, but singing vowels is one of the quickest ways to condition one's voice.
Just try to sing a consonant and see what happens...try to hold out a "p," "r," "s," etc. When we sing we are holding out vowels.
