My personal favorites are, Bootsy Collins (James Brown), Verdine White (Earth, Wind, & Fire) and Alan Gorrie Average White Band).

Hope this is helpful,
Greg

I will also say Bootsy Collins, and Verdine White and I will also add........

Larry Graham (the man that invented thumpnig/slapping and plucking)
Louis Johnson (Brothers Johnson)
Bernard Edwards (Chic)
Marcus Miller (Luther Vandross, Miles Davis, Daivid Sanborn, The Jamaica Boys, and producer)
James Jamerson (Motown Legend)
The guy that played for Cameo (???)
The guy that played for Slave (Mark Adams???)
Pino Palladino ( a lot of young cats are hiring this man to play for them today)
Nathan Watts (Stevie Wonder)
Brown Mark (Prince)
Levi Searcer, Jr. (Prince, Madhouse)
Leon Sylvers III (producer)
Randy Jackson (the American Idol judge. Honorable Mention album  "All American Girls" by Sister Sledge.  He clowned on that record)
Terry Lewis (The Time.  Simple, yet classic bass solos)
Chuckii Booker (producer, sideman))
Derek "DOA" Allen (producer, sideman)
Carol Kaye (She played on a lot of Motown stuff back in the day.  She also played for TV themes.  Most notably, the theme from "Hawaii Five-O"  I think she's funky.  She's a great player, and still plays to this day.  Very old school)

That's all I can think of for now.

Don't forget Henry "Hank" Davis (LTD) who was somewhat underrated but is heard on Diana Ross' "Love Hangover" as well as Thelma Houston's "Don't Leave Me This Way".  Bob Babbitt, successor to James Jameson, Jr. and bassist on Dennis Coffey's classic "Scorpio".

Now that is a wonderful addition to this list.  I admit, I didn't know the name, but I'm very familiar with Henry Davis' work.  He's had me playing "air bass" many a day when LTD came on.  That man has laid down some classic basslines.   I'm gonna be doing some research now.  Thanks for that info.

Tell you what...if you can find the "Shine On" album/CD, check out the track "Getaway".  Henry gets a lil' quazy on the riff.

Don't forget...Chuck Rainey (Steely Dan's "Peg"), Quincy Jones ("The Streetbeater" a.k.a. "Sanford & Son Theme", etc.), early movie work w/Dave Grusin including "Baretta's Theme"

I got that Steely Dan "Aja" CD.  I also have Donald Fagen's CD's as well.  Great bass work on those.

There is another one although I haven't heard anything from him in long time.

His name is Kevin "Thumper" Hatchett and the first time I heard him play was on D.J. Rogers album on RCA titled "On The Road".  This guy was like a train with the trottle broken.  I have a large library of vinyl at home dating back to the 70's and then some.
