GRADE ME!!!!
« on: February 02, 2007, 10:40:31 AM »
In my quest to understand chord progression I have been giving myself quizzes in converting some of the posted chords I see into numbered progressions instead of letters can someone let me know if I am correct. I have chose the simple "Hallelujah" song in C.

Original
HALLELUJAH"
KEY OF "C"

G - HAL
G - LE
C/EGC - LU
D/FGC - UU
E/EGC - JAH
E/EGC - HAL
B - LE
F/CFA X 2 - LU,JAH
D/DF#A - HAL
C - LE
G/DGB - LUJAH
F/DFGB (FILLER)
G/CFA, DGB - HAL, LE
C/CFA - LU
C/CEG - JAH

The Numbers(I am using the bass note as my reference)
5-1-2-3-6-4-2-1-5-4-5-1

Please let me know if this is correct and if it isnt feel free to explain to me what I did wrong. Thanks.

Judging from these chords alone, here is what I see:  1-2-3-4-2-5-4-5-1

G - HAL
G - LE
C/EGC - LU  (1)
D/FGC - UU  (2)
E/EGC - JAH (3)
E/EGC - HAL
B - LE
F/CFA X 2 - LU,JAH  (4)
D/DF#A - HAL  (2)
C - LE
G/DGB - LUJAH  (5)
F/DFGB (FILLER)  (4)
G/CFA, DGB - HAL, LE  (5)
C/CFA - LU  (1)
C/CEG - JAH

Some of those don't have bass notes with them, so I'm guessing they are just melody notes played while holding down the previous chord.

Now that you got that concept down, you should break the progressions down even further and examine the RH chords that go with those bass notes:

C/EGC = C in LH, C major chord in RH *(1st inversion) = 1 / 1 chord = 1 chord   *inversion optional

D/FGC = D in LH, C sus4 chord in RH (1st inversion) = 2 / 1 sus4 chord

E/EGC = E in LH, C major chord in RH (1st inversion) = 3 / 1 chord

F/CFA = F in LH, F major chord in RH (2nd inversion) = 4 / 4 chord = 4 chord

D/DF#A = D in LH, D major chord in RH (root position) = 2 / major 2 chord = major 2 chord

G/DGB = G in LH, G major chord in RH (2nd inversion) = 5 / 5 chord = 5 chord

F/DFGB = F in LH, G7 chord in RH (2nd inversion) = 4 / V7 chord

G/CFA = G in LH, F major chord in RH (2nd inversion) = 5 / 4 chord

C/CFA = C in LH, F major chord in RH (2nd inversion) = 1 / 4 chord

This way, you can play these same chords the exact same way in any key.  This is that next level of understanding progressions.
