With the comparison of sticks, I usually look up the specifications of each model (read: go to the manufacturer's websites). At that point, I will be able to see the comparison and contrast as it relates to the diameter (thickness) and length of the stick.
As far as not being able to find a specific stick locally, I would ask your music store to order a few pairs or you could just order a couple from a reputable online dealer. That's usually the easiest solution.
