Motif or Fantom
« on: February 19, 2007, 11:44:30 AM »
Just went keyboard shopping.  I really liked the Motif sounds.  I've never had a workstation before and I'm not that smart when it comes to computerizing  ?/? ?/? ?/? (I'm a musician not a computer programmer!)  Really I would be learning how to.  Are these keyboards going to be difficult to learn on?  (program wise)  I pretty sure I can learn how to use the keyboard if I take the time and it's not over the top.  Do more people like the Roland better?   I'm really favoring the Motif at this point but I'll go back a couple of times to make sure that's what I want before purchasing.

Thanks guys!

The sequencer on the Motif is not easy to use, but the one on the Fantom is.  IMO.

Man I don't own either one. But like someone said earlier. The Fantom Sequencer is definitely easier to use. Buuuuut personally I think the Motif is going to have the Fantom beat as far as sounds go, mainly the pianos, and elec pianos (rhodes)! But yeah man I was in your shoes not too long ago being that they are the two baddest keyboards out right now, hands down. Korgs are good too (the upper level ones) but they're really nice with synths, leads, and horns! But thats about it. But im goin with the Motif in about 2months. It'll be a learning experience but it'll all work out sometime! Good luck man....God bless

I just purchased a S90ES two weeks ago and it definately was a good decision. It shares the same sounds as the Motif ES and it has additional sounds. It also has an outstanding piano sound, it has Damper resonance (it can be tweaked to imitate the sound that you might hear from a grand piano if you are playing it with the top up; you can hear the "strings" as the hammers hit them). It is very realistic. The only real difference between this and the Motif ES is that it doesn't have an onboard sequencer (you can use cubase for that). That's fine with me because I will never use the sequencer. It is very user friendly and the keys feel great.

If your just getting into workstations then a Triton or a FantomX will do just fine. Both boards have good sounds.

I thought about getting an es8, but after going to play on the x8. I had to have it. I think the es feels better, and I like the sounds on both personally. But some of the things I liked about the functionality of the x8 convinced me. You can change the speed of the arpeggiator right there on the spot for any sound. And Of course I like the pads. And the fantom has way more space and memory expansion room for big juicy samples. Plus cheap portable drives to hook up to it as well. And the color screen is off the chain.

But I dont know what I was thinking about when I wanted the es8, I arleady have a classic motif6. They're not that much different.

I was looking at the S90es too but it didnt have recording as an option so I opted for the workstations.

When I was at the music store the guy mentioned that Yamaha was coming out with somthin new in april but he said 'you'll like this motif'  ;).  So maybe I should wait and see the new keys if anything maybe the price will drop like someone else said.  (and the fantom will still be there....)

The Fantom is good for live stuff, but when it comes to spending 2700 or 1600...I think I would go with 1600...When I get big time you better believe that fantom will be in my fleet of keyboards
I'm destined for greatness!!!

This is not really true. The yamaha Motif XS model is coming out in April. Its been said by Yamaha that the ES Model is SOON to be discontinued! So even if the price DOES drop....you betta hurry and cop one now while they're still producing em!

They will actually arrive sooner. Yamaha is ahead of scheduel and the XS should be in stores in the first week of april.
Yamaha might keep producing the ES for another year, they did that with the motifclassic.
