YOU CAN'T BKE SERIOUS!
« on: February 26, 2007, 07:41:38 AM »
Bkefore service yesterday, our drummer came in and was setting up.  I noticed that he only had his snare & bass up at the time.  Now, as I go to help him set everything else up, he stops me and says he's not gonna need all that today. I'm like  ?/?

Anyway, he proceeds to set up just his cymbals & hi hat.   I'm thinkin' to myself W.I.T.N.H.?  I thought this was gonna bke some hot garbage. WRONG!!!!  My boy proceeded to kicc like he had the whole set up.  I was truly amazed.  Dude was playing the bass w/his foot pedal & his sticcs!  I asked him after service why he did that and he said he had a concert to do afterwards, so he wanted to bke out ASAP.

Now, I'm sure none of this surprising to all you drummers in here, but here are my questions:

What is that kind of set-up called?

Is that how you all do it (for those that do)?

What's the origin of this type of thing?

I do that set up at a rehearsal or a small gig sometimes myself.  I call it my practice kit.  Sometimes I just don't wanna lug all of that gear around, so I set up my kick, snare, and h-hat.  And since I have Pearl kit, I put the cymbal booms in the bass drum tom brackets, and hook up another arm with a clamp.  I use 2 crashes(a 15" and 16" crash) and an 18" crash as a ride/crash.  I have done many a gig and wedding reception with that setup.  The last time I used that setup, I put it down to the point I was getting hugs and stuff from the ladies in the place.  WOW!!!!!!!!!!!

Try that setup sometimes.  It forces you to be creative.

I'm not a drummer, but I caught on to your set up though.  I was calling it a skeleton set.

Yeah, my boy was doing his thang for serious.  It was crucial.

Feelin' the Avatar BTW.  :D :D

haha. It occurred in a few areas so I was under the impression that it was not a typographical error. I was curious as to why. LoL. I have done the Bass n Snare setup before as well. However, I do like to include my floor tom. Thats usually the smallest I go now. As far as the "Official" name of it, I dont know.

I call it the ?uestlove kit.  Thats the set up that I played on this last production that I did.  It makes you think totally different because you don't have as many conventional sounds to draw from.

Interesting name.  It does make you call upon your creative Muse quite heavily.

My wife and I once visited a church that was undergoing building renovation so there was not enough space for the keys, piano, kit, etc.... so all that the drummer had that Sunday morning was his snare and a pair of sticks. He drew so many diifferent sounds out of that one snare that every song played sounded full and well complemented by the drums.

Although this is a bit extreme for me, I have always favoured the minimalistic approach. At the moment, all I have setup at home for practice is a snare, hi-hat, bass drum and ride. :)

Well, ?uest (of the Roots) was the first cat that I'd ever seen play with this type of set up.  He generally plays a floor tom, a crash, and a ride.  I've made gobbs of money playing this type of set up, and i'll bet that its gotten me gigs from playing this scaled-down kit because it showed the other cats in the band that I was about the music.  And wasn't interested in taking up space.
