I use a pick. But for some techniques like harmanized sliding, you may do better using your fingers.

mostly a pick or hybrid picking. once in a blue moon i'll need the sound that you get with fingers only, but very rarely.

I use mostly pick, but during alter call or times where I use the acoustic setting on my GNX-3, I'll use my fingers to give it a more authentic sound.

Both.

Another vote for both...

Fingers almost exclusively only on nylon,....

but on my electric I use a rather small Dunlop Jazz III pick or a 3.0 Dunlop Stubby, so I can "hide" it or drop it and go to a fingers only style like Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits.

I keep a selection of different picks on top of my amp and think of them like having various guitar pedals. I have a very thin floppy full sized pick for Johnson Brothers-style funk rhythm (where the pick hit is PART of the total sound) and a full sized heavy pick (my old favorite) so I can use the back corner for a rounder slop getting across string groups.

I think of them like drummers do various cymbals. I have favorites, but some picks are simply perfect for special effects and sounds I want to hear.

It all depends what sound I hear in my head and I now instinctively know what pick will give me the closest sound.

I almost use different picks to make up for not having a compressor onboard. It's strange, but it's just become habit now.

I wish I could use a thumb pick well....but I tend to use stay with a small pick and fingers for rockabilly/Scotty Moore/Brian Setzer stuff. I completely lose picks for a cool Keb' Mo' country funk finger pickin' groove.

If I actually think about my pick usage, I get myself confused. It's become automatic over the years.   ::)

for electric, when i first started it felt easier to play with finger when doing single notes or scales, and i didn't have the patience to use the pick but after a couple of weeks of practicing witht the pick, it makes a huge difference in tone, speed, and accuracy... Sometimes on slow ballads i'll just use my fingers, but 90% of the time i use my pick,

For acoustic i'll use a Dunlop .40 (something) nylon pick, for some reason it just sounds better to me... (and sometimes i use more of my fingers on acoustic) usually slower songs...

+1 on "both"

I'll even switch back and forth in one song.  There are certain licks that I just like with my fingers better.  I can hit those bluesy "slurry of notes" licks better with my fingers.

I use a pick alomost exclusively.  Sometimes I'll play octaves with my thumb to get a jazzy/Wes Montgomery feel or play some finger syle comp cords over bass lines, but I am not a master of that style.  Interestingly, I play bass guitar exclusivley with my fingers.

I'd like to bring up another point on fingers.
Does anyone know how to reduce finger moisture after several hours of playing?
I've tried a dry towel and baby powder. They both remind me of my bowling years. I've also tried "Finger Ease" but real problem is finger moister.

Send me some feedback...Thanks!

I use a little cloth to wipe my fingers and my strings to reduce rust and whatnot

The style I normally play requires the use of a thumb pick and fingers.  When working with others I normally use a flat pick.

I mostly use a pick but I rarely use my fingers. Can someone explain to me other styles of picking?
