The $1000 you've been blessed with can get you a Bass you'll be happy with for quite some time, Keep in mind while reading these responses that they are only opinions of other bassplayers find your own Sound & Groove
FYI: I Own a Carvin LB76P, Musicman 5, ESP 4, Yamaha TRB5, Treker custom built 5, Aria Pro Fretless, Steinberger. they all have different
sound,string spacing,pickups, active/passive etc..
When you go to the store sit and play the bass don't rush! you work hard for that $1000, if it needs adjustments ask them to please make them all it takes is a allen wrench or 2 most will do this if they have a good rep.
Keep this in mind (Traditional & Contemporary) Gospel Music that's the
difference in the opinions of 4,5,6, strings
(The Spirit of Memphis, The Five Blind Boys of Mississippi,Willie Neal Johnson) Then you have (Fred Hammond,John p Kee,Tonex,Helen Baylor Etc...) when you hear that on the high pop off that C combined with low end, all I can say is PRAISE HIM! ( dont limit yourself)
Pray up or pay up
