Purchasing new bass.
« on: August 05, 2004, 03:50:00 PM »
Good Afternoon LGM,
Okay, I've pushed the custom bass idea a little bit further down the road, in about 2 months I'm going to purchase a new bass. Problem is, I can't decide on what kind. I'll have about $1000, so I know I can get a mid/upper class bass. I'm seriously considering a Carvin LB76, or an Ibanez SR500. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanx and God Bless!!!!
Chris K.

New Bass Guitar

lildrummerboy4, I think both of those guitars are good choices.  Ibanez and Carvin both make quality guitars. I have a friend that plays a custom made Carvin and he loves it. I play an Ibanez GSR 200 ( my 1st bass only been playing bass for a few months) but I love it. I get a lot of compliments on it too. In my opinion you'd get more for your money with Ibanez, Carvin can be a little pricey. I'm thinking of buying a 5 string, and it'll definitely be an Ibanez.

+1

Jazz basses are great for church music where you don't necessarily know what you're going to be playing.  They're infamous for being a very versitile instrument.  The other thing is, if I remember correctly, the LB76 is a 6-string.  Remember, you're playing bass.  The higher range really doesn't have that much use.  The old adage is "there's no money to be made above the 5th fret".  As much as I like playing up high, that's unfortunately pretty accurate.  Also, the extra low range of the B string is almost unintelligable with the notes under E.  It sounds like a low rumble with no definition.  And unless you have a really nice rig, you'll end up simply not getting heard.  The best bass players ever (Jaco, Jamerson, etc.) all did their stuff on a regular old 4-string.  The extra range really won't enhance your music much at all.  Of course, that's just my opinion, you can get whatever you want, I don't really care.

I have 2 jazz bass guitars my favorite is my DeArmond Pilot V (5 string) but i cannot love the tone of my 4-string Fender Jazz. My next bass will possibly be a 5-string Fender Jazz or a 5-string Conklin.

I know what you're saying, but I'm talking about from an amplification standpoint through the PA, if you have one.  When I'm not playing, I do sound in church and when the bass players play below E, it really becomes unintelligible with everything else going on.  Sure it may sound good on its own, but with anything, it's a different world once you start playing with other people.  Of course, if you want a nice low rumble that will shake the whole church, I guess wailing on the low B would sure do the job.

If you've got a good rig, you can EQ it to actually sound like a note, but that ruins the tone.  I hate to use EQ on the bass when doing sound or when I'm playing.  The bass sounds best unaltered.  And with notes below E, it's hard for normal people to hear, period.  It can be a good effect every once in awhile, but if you play below E, you won't be heard well, you'll just sound like another kick drum.  One problem I have with bass players in general (not saying anyone in particular here) is that they never get heard. Bass wasn't meant to be this constat low rumble, it's beautiful when heard.  Anyway, that's just my opinion on that, and I'm kind of into old school stuff.

The Ibanez basses are nice I have an old school sr405 and it's a very well made instrument.  However I would be careful because the sound gears are made with very thin necks, make sure that before you buy one that you're not going regret it when trying to play any slap bass etc etc.  The Ibanez bass has tight strings and sounds great.  But just make sure it will fit the style of playing that you would like it for. Mine works great for me and a second four string fills in when I need some fun ;)

thank you all for you input! I believe I'm going to get an Ibanez sr500. I've been playing on my friends for a while and I really like it. AS for the six string, I think vMac convinced me not to get one, but I've always played a five string bass, I started on a five, anytime I play a four string, it feels foreign to me. Thanx again!!!! God bless

Blessings lildrummerboy4
The $1000 you've been blessed with can get you a Bass you'll be happy with for quite some time, Keep in mind while reading these responses that they are only opinions of other bassplayers find your own Sound & Groove

FYI: I Own a Carvin LB76P, Musicman 5, ESP 4, Yamaha TRB5, Treker custom built 5, Aria Pro Fretless, Steinberger. they all have different
sound,string spacing,pickups, active/passive etc..

When you go to the store sit and play the bass don't rush! you work hard for that $1000, if it needs adjustments ask them to please make them all it takes is a allen wrench or 2 most will do this if they have a good rep.

Keep this in mind  (Traditional & Contemporary) Gospel Music that's the
difference in the opinions of 4,5,6, strings
(The Spirit of Memphis, The Five Blind Boys of Mississippi,Willie Neal Johnson) Then you have (Fred Hammond,John p Kee,Tonex,Helen Baylor Etc...) when you hear that on the high pop off that C combined with low end, all I can say is PRAISE HIM! ( dont limit yourself)

Pray up or pay up
