I'm taking a quick course in theory. Can someone please explain (in simple terms) tonic and dominant triads and how to form them? Thanks!

Triads are basically 3 note chords. Chords like:
Major
Minor
Augmented
Diminished

Tonic means 1, so whatever key you are in, a tonic chord would your 1 chord. In C it would a C major chord, C-E-G.
Dominant means 5, so whatever key you are in, a dominant chord would be your 5 chord. In C it would be a G major chord, G-B-D.
