developing pedal accuracy two foot technique
« on: September 09, 2007, 04:34:56 AM »
if you read then you should get your hands on some organ music and begin reading it
or even get a hymn book and play the lowest note the bass line with your feet

you can use one foot if you play hammond but if you want to gain some pipe organ technique lean to use two feet

I dont know how or why it works but there is something about reading a piece of music and working out the pedal parts between both feet
even if you go back to one foot technique you become more accurate

It doesent matter if you are able to plat the piece fast or at tempo or sound any good playing it

just the effort will make your pedal playing much more accurate

i play two organs at my church
and one at my school

the pedal boards on each organ are completely different and it is difficult to go from one organ to the other

the pedal board is curved on the hammond
straight on the pipe organ at my school
and just huge and set up ergonomically different on the pipe organ at my church

i always had great difficulty playing the pedals on the pipe organ at my church

but after one day

literally one day reading some piece of music called communion
with a very easy pedal part

i was able to play all the songs i know with 100% improvement

I cant explain it but i
share this so that others who want to develop there pedalling to try this out

this is what the books say about playing hymns

there are two methods
to work a hymn from a nymnal using pipe organ technique

you can play the soprano and alto with the right hand
and the tenor with the left hand
and the bass with the foot

or

you can play the soprano with the right hand
the alto and tenor with the left hand (invert the notes in the left hand  when they are to far apart to play as written)
play the bass with the feet

try to play the more classical hymns this way or the christmas hymns
the old hymns written in the 1700's these lend themselves to this type of treatment.

if you are concerned about gettin your technique on the pedals improved
give this a try

do it for a day and see if the songs you know dont sound better after trying this

BE blessed

To be or not to be that is the question you anwer when you pray practice and read your word

I always suggest this to people who are learning organ or who wish to improve their technique.  I actually started in pipe organ before I got into Hammond, so my first pedal experience was with two feet.  Those basics helped me plenty!  The basics on pipe organ pedaling will help you leaps and bounds on the Hammond.
