MTD...I just think it gives better tones, but I am not as technical as most when it comes to the bass. :-\
I'm destined for greatness!!!

I've played a smith and it was nice, and I am yet to try a MTD. Everyone tells me that MTD's are the greatest for gospel though.

MTD gets my vote....Smith is nice but I am not crazy about the electronics on the Smith but I don't own either just played around with them both...I am sure someone who owns either can be much more credible than I!  ;D

MTD is my choice. I have played on both and the tone I prefer is all MTD. Not saying that the Smith tone is bad but the MTD tone gives me what I am looking for.

Well just a look at my avatar, tells you how i voted. IMO, this is just personal preference, I have owned both, while both are fine instruments I prefer the voice and feel of the MTD USA
Mike makes an impeccable instrument, and each one seems to have it's own voice. Again this is IMHO, someone else could feel the totally opposite favoring the Smith just my .02 cents

This is the best  6 sting I have ever played:tone, playability, craftsmanship
MTD 635/24Crotch Walnut top/Ash body/Ash neck/Maple board

This one is still in production about 3 week from completion
MTD 535/24  Myrtle top (Burl & Flame) Tulip wood body(poplar) Maple neck/ Rosewood board in blueburst
This is the wood combination Andrew used on the MTD4Lyfe track.

I'll take one of these please. I love the sound of single coil pickups. I don't think I've seen an MTD with SC's but if they did build one I'd have to reconsider.

You're in luck, Mike just released a SC bass in the shape of a Jazz at summer NAMM. He sounding as if he didn't want to release it.

Click the top MTD link.

My opinion is that both have their places. I once wanted a Smith, but now I gots to get the MTD.
Keep God first and he'll do the rest!!!

Come on now, that's like comparing apples and oranges! If you are a working bassist you should have one of each plus a Fender Jazz in your collection..They each have their place and other then the Jazz cant be used on everything.

Oh yeah, they can! I've owned a lot of basses over my 30+ years of playing and I always seem to come back to the old trusty Jazz bass (or bass with SC pups). In fact, I'm going to have Nino Valenti build me a 5 string Jazz in the vein of Larry Grahams all white (headstock too) bass with a chrome pickup cover over the neck pickup.

Out of the two, I prefer the MTD.  I like the tonal versatility of MTD more than the Smith. Not saying that the Smith isn't versatile but, I've never heard a Smith (whether live or recorded) that I couldn't tell it was a Smith.

I prefer the body style of the MTD to the Smith (maybe because I'm only 5'-4"). The Smith would take up my whole body.

But, I really don't think you could lose with either one.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like he's playing a Z5 on the bassplayer video.  Check out the 4+1 and the tuners aren't Hipshot ultras. (closed back - Gotohs maybe?)

Lakland or Callowhill

I played Mo Fitz' Dh6 from callowhill and that bass was a BEAST!!!!

Lakland just speaks for itself.  If you don't know about them go find somewehre that has one and try it.

I don't think callowhill nor lakland  getting enough props to be honest.

I think the DH6 that Reese has is like 7lbs or something stupid light like that.  and it felt and played GOOD.

Just hard to devribe.

And my 55-02 is like a perfect match for my body.

Needless to say if I ever spend some big bucks on another bass it'll probably be a callowhill.  After pleying the dh6 I'm sold.

I had a Lakland briefly and got rid of it. Just wasn't my cup of tea! I'm a 34" scale neck guy and dig the smaller neck and spacing profile of the Smiths. I believe the MTD's are all 35" scale. All have excellent B's but I haven't heard a better B than on a Smith! Just my humble opinion. I just can't afford one right now.
