HELP PLEASE!!
« on: September 02, 2004, 09:32:49 AM »

HELLO EVERYONE,

I ALREADY POSTED A SUBJECT CALLED "NEW BASSIST", HOWEVER I DID NOT RECEIVE ANY RESPONSE.  I AM IN NEED OF SOME HELP WITH THE BASS PLAYER AT MY CHURCH.  I WILL NOT MAKE THIS POST AS LONG AS THE OTHER ONE, SO I'LL BE BRIEF.  IF ANYONE CAN HELP ME GIVE HIM SOME ADVICE, BOOKS, TAPES OR PRACTICE REGIMENS THAT HE CAN DO TO IMPROVE HIS LICKS, RIFFS AND OVERALL SOUND THAT WOULD BE GREAT.  HE IS A GOOD BASS PLAYER, HOWEVER, I FIND TWO CONSISTENT MISTAKES WITH HIS PLAYING:

1)  HIS RIFFS AND LICKS ARE ALWAYS THE SAME AND THE ONES HE PLAY AREN'T GOOD, AND

2)  HE GETS VERY TIRED WHEN PLAYING DANCING/SHOUTING MUSIC.  HE STATES THAT IT'S VERY HARD TO KEEP RUNNING A DRIVE.

SO, IF ANY ONE HAS ANY TIPS OR IDEAS ON THIS MATTER, PLEASE RESPOND AND HELP ME.

TIA

Can you help him with the bass line on the keys? A switch between bassline from keys and bassline from guitar might be a really good sound, and give him some time to rest.

Now listen everybody. When a person is having trouble with speaking, they need to read. When they are having trouble with cooking, they need to cook and watch others cook. When a musician is limited musically, it is because of their exposure. Period. He needs to listen to some more gospel music, preferrably give him examples of the kind of gospel music you want him to produce. Eventually these musical ideas will get into his mind, and he'll want to explore them himself.

Hope this helps . . .

VERY GOOD ADVICE.

THE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION IS YES.  WHENEVER HE'S TIRED I'LL EITHER RUN THE BASS MYSELF OR I'LL SWITCH AND GO TO ANOTHER PART.  THIS USUALLY HELPS BUT I STILL WANTED SOME SUGGESTIONS OF SITES OR BOOKS, ETC. HE CAN PURCHASE TO PRACTICE AND IMPROVE HIS SKILLS.  BUT, I GUESS HE JUST HAS TO DO LIKE EVERYONE ELSE AND TAKE THE TIME AND INITIATIVE TO RESEARCH AND PRACTICE.  ANYWAY, THANKS FOR THE HELP.  GODBLESS.

I'm a newbie to the site but hope I've got somethin' useful to offer!

I agree with BBoy, Give hime some music that is representative of what you want him to produce and get him to work hard at it!
If he's getting tired, he needs to practice more in his own time. He needs to build more stamina into those hands! He may have a problem with his technique which means his hands will tire because of poor posture - a tuition video may help...

Another suggestion: Get him working at locking in to the rhythm section by simplfying everything. For example - do some playing with just keyboard, bass & drums. Start with something familiar and "practice" improvising together. Get him to follow the keyboards, listening for the changes and training his musical sensitivity.

Hope this helps...
