NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- A Louisiana prosecutor says a judge's decision to send a black teenager charged in the beating of a white classmate back to jail had nothing to do with that case.

Instead, an attorney says Mychal Bell was sentenced to 18 months in jail for violating probation on two counts of simple battery and two counts of criminal destruction of property.

Bell had faced the charges before the December attack on a white classmate at Jena High School in Louisiana. The decision to pursue adult felony charges against Bell and others who became known as the Jena Six led to charges of unfairness and, eventually, to a march last month.

More than 20,000 demonstrators gathered last month in the small central Louisiana town to protest what they perceive as differences in how black and white suspects are treated.
