After picking up the basics of a song, do you learn the song exactly like its played on the CD??

If it's easy enough, I will. If it's a tough bassline, I'll come up with my own twist on it but keeping the same vibe so the feel of the song doesn't get thrown off!

Right, and even if you can get it exactly like the CD, you can still throw in your own twists without going out of bounds.  Improvise a bit by adding simple riffs and chords in strategic places and returning to the pocket.  You'd be surprised how a simple touch can make folks' upper lip and toes curl like "OH SNAP that was NOICE!!"

I try to remember that what's on the CD is probably that bassist's own twist on what was originally scored or what he/she thinks it should be.  And, if you were to hear it live, the bassist very well might play something different.

The main reason for me to learn something exactly how it is on the CD (if I can) is simply for my own learning and skill-improving pleasure.

I try to learn it exactly, even if I have to be on a particular part 5 hours! ;) ;)
