Jeremy gets to borrow all kinds of cool toys.
That is the original J(unk) proto, I learned alot from building it and made significant improvements in the actual production models. That one features 60's style pickup placement, as a result of that Maurice and I developed the "two-seven" which features a 70's placed bridge pickup with a neck pickup that is a little closer to the neck. It's the ultimate slap J bass, but thanks to Carey's proprietary pickups it tracks and cuts amazingly in session and live situations. The "fingerstyle" tone is super sharp and defined. Very articulate and "burpy" on the bridge and super fat in the neck. Honestly, I didn't take these basses too seriously because I'm not a huge J fan (there are so many great ones out there I didn't know what I could contribute), but we created a real monster with the finished versions. Many thanks to Maurice and Owen Biddle for helping to get these going and dial them in.
The one in Jeremy's picture was a "quick-built" concept proto designed to get feedback.
That particular bass features the first pair of Nordstrand Big Splits.
I'd be interested in knowing what Jeremy thinks of Maurice's "real" one, but from what I hear Maurice isn't willing to share it!
Anyway, back to the topic at hand: I like the low-riders but the sunbeams are my favorite strings in the DR lineup. Carey turned me on to these and they have a real even sound and a great feel.
