"DW’s big news is the ‘X’ shells which have wood plies cross laminated at a 45 degree angle. Apparently these are a spin off from the VLT shells and have an even lower fundamental pitch but retain the strength of the horizontal ply shells. DW were showing their 23” bass drum which will feature on Neil Pearts new kits. I haven’t heard it so I won’t comment on it at the moment, but we are told it has the attack of a 22” and the bottom of a 24”. No surprises there then.

The hardware ranges have been simplified with the 9000, 5000 and 6000 being joined by the 7000 single braced line. However, there is an 8000 hi hat to match the 8000 pedal from last year. We drummers are soooo fussy. The cable hat has been redesigned to be much less bulky and the cable is now removable for easy transportation."

"Big news from Sonor is the 30th Anniversary Steve Smith kit. This comes in 8x8, 10x8, 12x8, 14x14, 16x16” with a 20x16” kick with two snares (14x5 ½ metal and 12x5” beech) in 9 ply beech, finished in Birdseye Amber satin. It looks lovely and comes complete with a MP3 player filled with 100 of Steve’s favo(u)rite tracks that he has played on. Only 100 will be made...

There are two new Force shell packs – the 3007 and the 2007 – and in around the bottom comes the Extreme Force kits with either 20 or 22” kicks."

"Sabian were launching their APX line of cymbals which they describe as cutting and heavy, and are aimed at the harder hitting drummer. Normally this means thick and unresponsive, but these sounded great, with a glassy high end and even though we were 6 meters or so from them when they were being demonstrated, they sounded loud enough to make us blink. In addition to ride, splash, crash, hats, and Chinese in two sizes, the APX series also has two O-Zone crashes with six holes, heavier Solid models for the very heavy hitters and pre-packs in 14” hats, 16” crash, 20” ride or 14” hats, 18” crash, 22” ride and an Effects Pack with 10” splash, 18” Chinese.

Alu Bells are two thick sand cast aluminium bells in 7” and 9”. Aluminium is generally associated with cymbals and bells but these sounded like mini church bells and rang forever (well, a long time). With a few more you could play an accurate version of the Westminster chimes. With a little help from Jojo Mayer, the 13” Fierce hats are now in general production after Sabian had loads of requests after Jojo used them in his ‘Weapons for the Modern Drummer’ DVD. These are thin, dark hats which match the Fierce ride and are part of the Vault series. The 23” Ltd Edition Over Ride has a massive bell and will be limited to just 200 cymbals. It has a massive 8 ½ bell and is aimed at the heavier drummer. The 21” Vault Cross Over ride is a general purpose cymbal which caught our ear in the press launch. It’s quite shallow with a very sticky sound over a low HH roar and almost sounded like two cymbals being played at once."

"Zildjian were launching loads of cymbals. The K range gets new 15 and 16” (yes, really) Light Hats to go with the 14” model already out. There are 14” High Definition Hats to go with the High Definition ride which has been redesigned (again with the help of Terry Lynne Carrington) and a 22” Light Ride to go with the 24” model. The Hybrid line (which won the MIPA 2006 award) gets new 15, 16 and 18” crashes to go with the existing 17 and 19”. There is also a 14 ¼” pair of hats in the Hybrid range to go with the exiting 13 ¼” and a new 17” china. There are new 21 and 22” K crashes which have been made with help from Zak Starkey. These are medium weight and come in brilliant finish and to my ears make great light rides as well.

The ZHT range gets a 10” splash, 20” crash/ride and 16” china. The ZBT range gets 8 and 10” china splashes which sounded great for entry level cymbals. Adrian Young has redesigned his signature stick too with a black butt, a white shaft and a black tip. Antonio Sanchez also has a signature stick. Zildjian also has two new maple sticks – an Acorn and a Mini Ball."

"Vic Firth was showing 6 new stick models. Jeff Davis is a gospel drummer who has a new hickory model between a 5A and a 5B. Andy Hurley from ‘Fall Out Boy’ has chunky hickory model close to a 2B. There’s a hybrid tenor/snare stick for Tom Aungst (DCI member), where as Vinnie Paul has a big and long hickory model. Nicko McBrain is new to Vic and has a chunky hickory model and finally Joey Heredia has a maple model with a very long and tapered tip."

"Hudson has a new ‘Master Series’ collection which is filmed masterclasses by some of the top drummers around. Steve Gadd, Antonio Sanchez, Jason Bittner and John Blackwell all agreed to have a masterclass filmed and the results are on these DVDs. Steve Smith has a new DVD out in March as do Tommy Igoe, Aaron Spears and there is also a ‘best of’ the Modern Drummer festivals DVD as well."

"The Legacy Classic kits and drums are available off the shelf and come in either 18” or 14” deep bass drums, so players can decide if they want the classic shallow size or the modern deep sizes. They have a maple shell with a mahogany core and maple reinforcing hoops and are aimed at the classic market but made with modern techniques. The Centennial series fits in above the Accent series and below the Classic Maple. Kits come with a metal snare and come in two lacquers and two wraps. The Nomad kit is an Accent range kit in 18x14, 10x8, 12x8 and 14x12 FT with a 13x5 snare, designed as a small entry level kit."

Mapex - "Orion Exotic gets a new Chocolate Burst finish which looks very different and bold and should sell well. This kit is just for the UK market and comes in a two up, two down set up. The standard Orion gets a Butter Burst finish which fades from honey to walnut and comes with black hardware in the UK as a special order. There is also a special edition Orion with extra thin shells (5.1mm), which comes in a Copper sparkle finish with chrome hardware. This kit will be VERY limited in the UK. Saturn gets a glass glitter Crystal Krush finish with gun metal hardware. Again, only for the UK. Pro M gets a Zebrawood finish which has an amber fade over the top of the stripy wood. This kit will be limited too in the UK.

Pro M Birch gets a Hermosa Fade which is a bright yellow to dark orange fade. It’s very bright and rather nice. VX gets a transparent cherry finish and there is a limited edition QR kit in Grey Sparkle with black hardware. Snare wise, Mapex have a limited edition 15 ply 12mm Flame Honey maple snare in 14x6.5”. It has die cast hoops and comes with a Black Panther gig bag. There are also two 14x8” Pro Series snares."

"Paiste had loads of new models in the Twenty range, 21 to be exact.  As well as expanding the amount of cymbals, Paiste also released Light hats and rides and thin crashes so the range as a whole is much more flexible. These should all be available from March. Big news was the Nicko McBrain Power Slave ride which is a Reflector Bell ride. It has got the Power Slave name only while the Power Slave tour last, when it shall revert to the Reflector Bell Ride name. It’s available in 20 and 22” sizes and available in March. Signature wise, there are a load of new models. The Crystal Thin crashes have a flat top bell like the old Short Crash models and come in 16, 18 and 20”.

The Crystal hats have flat bells too and come in 14”. The Cool Bell is not as thick as it sound and just comes in 8”. The Reflector Heavy Full crash comes in 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 and 22”, the Reflector Heavy Full hats come in 14” and the Reflector splash in 8 and 10”."

"Istanbul were showing the Lenny White signature 222 ‘Epoch’ ride and the Idris Muhammad 22” signature ride. The Azure range has a more contemporary sound without loosing the darkness of the Istanbul sound and comes in 14” hats, 16 and 18” crashes and 20 and 22” rides."

"Meinl were showing their new MB8 range which is a new entry/mid range in the style of the MB10s and MB20s. They are all machine made in Germany and are aimed at the rock and pop field. Gen X has some new China-crashes with 6 holes in 15, 17 and 19”. The Byzance range gets 21 and 22” crashes as well as a 24” ride. The Byzance Jazz series gets 3 new 16” crashes in extra thin, thin and medium thin weights. MB10 gets seven new models."
