Bring your string height down as low as it can go without any fret buzz. Neck must also be adjusted (it's gotta be straight). Slap sounds best with Fender style single coil pickups but it really doesn't matter. Basses with humbuckers (MTD, Smiths, Peaveys, etc) sound really good when slapped. Basses with Musicman style pickups (Stingray, Laklands) also sound great. It doesn't matter.

Are you talking about setup or actual technique?

If you were refering to setup... DW is correct.
If you were refering to technique...

Is it possible to slap on any bass, or do you need an expensive one? I have a Squier fender, and I'm thinking of learning bass.

You can slap on any bass, however the sound will vary depending on multiple variables.
Like DW was saying the actual setup of the bass will give different results.  Other things to consider technique, amp & bass settings, strings.

Thanks, maybe I'll start hangin 'round here, cuz I've had a bass for the past 4 years, and havent even touched it.
