What do you guys consider a good tempo for shout music?

IMO, like speeds on a blender...

120-140 = Baptist, etc. shout
140-170 = COGIC (w/opt. "Yes, Lord" topping)
180+= UPC/Apostolic!

Hit the "Holy Spirit" button for a burst of extra POWAH!

 ;)

I only can think of 5 right now, without repeating what others have already said

1. Be Original

2. Let God have his way.

3. Stay on tempo lol

4. You and the drummer keep eye contact @ all times

5. THE ORGAN HAS TO SCREAM LOL
The organ doesn't have a transpose button, learn it in every key!!!!!

as long as the bass player can keep up, then its no holds barred!! 180-190 is a fair tempo. I feel sorry if you're pedaling at that speed tho lol

follow up with COGIC Yes Lord...I forgot about that one. My bad

And there you have it!

I grew up Apostolic. We has some people that shouted slow (140-160), but most of the people shouted fast--or even ran. When these dudes came from South Carolina, we were always amazed at how fast they shouted.

Rule #1 should be, there are no rules.

Well, not any written rules.  There are unwritten rules though, hence everything in this thread, LOL.

I kinda disagree, All hymns should be considered "sacred" Yes Lord is the "Theme song"  of COGIC. It can be used anytime, wether its used to start the dervice, end the service, used in the middle of the sermon or used to end a shout.

As you probaly alreay know, many people replace the words to Yes lord with other words and keep the melody

Thanks for taking the time to post this, it was very good

I'm not COGIC, but usually my church goes into I love you jesus or I live to worship you.

(I thought Bb in the 90's was the original shout key...then in the 2000's we switched to Ab...making Eb the 3rd shouting key...)

My rules are:

-Don't shout too fast, don't shout too slow...
-Follow the MD, whoever is leading
-dont stay on your "breaks" too long...drive it, then go into a break, go back to drive... do another break, then another, then drive...
-dont be cute with it, if you gon bump em, bump em
-make sure everyone plays the same breaks...
-drummer must watch whomever is leading...

Those are my "rules"

Thats what I was comparing it to, Dance music. I know Freestyle is around 120 and most modern dance music is around 140 bpm

Yeah you can also incorporate the Yes Lord into the shout. (Just play it with the shout tempo) I dont think too many people are doing that though.

The Hottest yes lord is at that the end of the cornell thigpen shout I posted on youtube. they had to be goin at like 180 beats per minute.

It also sounds hot if you flow right  into the next that the choir is suposed to sing. I heard I guy go fom playing in Db, took the band thru every key til they reached Ab and did a run and flowed right into Hezekiah walker's "lift him up"

I got audio for both if yall want. just ask

Hey can i hear the audio for that please man ?
I'm not finished playing
