11th and 13th chords

Cmajor left hand + Bb major right hand = C11
Cmajor left hand + Esus4 (EAB)  = Cmajor13
Cmajor left hand + Dmaj = C13 #11 (minus the 7th)

I'lladd the Bb (dominant) or B(major) afterwards sometimes too, if I leave it out in the case of the last chord. I use these a lot.

Or, if you have real small hands, get the chord you want in the second inversion. Now, add the flatted seventh, the ninth and the eleventh. You can play the thirteenth with your thumb (it is the sixth of the octave you inverted twice.

Now play the root with your left hand.

I know this may sound complicated, so I'll give an example. Key of C

Get C in its second inversion, so you are playing G-C-E with your right hand.

From here, you can add the Bb (flatted seventh), the ninth (D) and the eleventh (F). Move your thumb up from the G to the A. Now play a C-C with your left hand, and step on the sustain pedal. Here is your C13th.

Hope that helps.

I have a couple of easy voicings for 11ths and 13ths.

11- Play a 5 in your left and a four chord in your right hand. ex: G/F  (In C)
13_ Play a 7th shell in your left hand and the minor 2 in your right hand ex:  CBb/DFA  (in C)

Now that 13th chord I just gave you has many possibilities. I use it as a dominant chord to approach the I chord as an intro.

For Example: key F

CBb/DFA 13th
CBb/DbEG
F/ACEG
F#/CEbGbA
G/BbDFG

I hope this helps you.

Thanks Ladyn..This is good looking..I didn't expect a response so soon..

It's certainly helping me..I want other people to benefit from this as well & to start coming up with their own way of quickly identifying patterns..

So more are welcome..
I'll work on my patterns when I'm alert as well.
