Wade In De Water key of D minor
« on: April 18, 2008, 10:45:55 PM »
Links to midis and sheet music are provided at the end of this post.

I’m currently studying Wade In De Water as my traditional song in a minor key.
I used musical phrases from a midi that was created by Colby Lauer. I also used musical phrases and lyrics from the African American Heritage Hymnal.

I’m using the D Melodic Minor Scale, which is the relative minor of F major.  The natural minor uses the same key signature as its relative major.  The natural minor starts on the 6th degree of its relative major. The natural minor scale is also referred to as the Aeolian mode of the major scale. The melodic minor is the same as the natural minor except the 6th note degree and the 7th note degree are each raised ˝ step.  Theory wise, the 6th and 7th note degrees are raised in ascending melodies and revert to the natural minor in descending melodies. But  historically, composers use whatever works based on the prevailing harmony.

I use the following terminology to distinguish the two possible tones for the 6th and 7th note degrees:
Natural means the tone is the note degree of the natural minor scale.
Melodic means the tone is raised ˝ step of the natural minor scale.

Here are the notes associated with the D Melodic Minor Scale
1.   D
2.   E
3.   F
4.   G
5.   A
6.   Bb (natural)   B (melodic)
7.   C (natural)    C# (melodic)

Practice hands separate.  I posted the fingerings that work for me.  I asked my piano teacher to review the fingering so that I would not post anything off the wall.  Use fingerings that work for you, but stay consistent.  Use the same fingering for identical patterns within the song.

I will post a version using triads in a subsequent post.

Version 1s  (With an added note in the first measure) is identical note for note to Version 1.   Version 1s shuffles (shortens and lengthens) some of the notes.  Learn Version 1 first then add your own shuffles.
