This topic has been conversation between me and my friends quite often. I always talk about who I'd use for sessions, when I'm focused more on producing.

First call guys, for major mainstream artists(depending on artist and material)
Terry Baker
Joel Smith
Jeremy Haynes
Calvin Napper
Mike Clemons
Rex Hardy
Pudge/Spanky(I'd love to use either of these guys on a project, outside of G.A)

Also, some newer guys, but great session players
Allen Mabson(Terry nephew)
Mike Reid(D.C.)
Diante Johnson(Chicago)

Just to make it interesting, what about guys that don't usually play gospel
Derico Watson
?uestlove
Todd Sucherman(I'm sure he'd nail some nice ballad stuff)
Paul Leim(church type tune maybe)
Keith Carlock
C. Rodgers
It's All For The Love Yall.....

...he has played Gospel.  That's where he came from.  What had happened was that Victor stole him. LOL

...I think he'll be back though.  I for one always thought that after Chris Coleman left New Breed, Derico was going to take over the throne.  Hey, it could still happen "after" Big Mike's season.  ;)

...nevermind....I reread what you stated.  "Don't usually play Gospel."  Sorry. :-[  Carry on.

...either way check out dericowatson.com and at the bottom you'll see the "Funk-box".  Look for the track that is called "Worthy".  That's a pretty hot track.

Mike Reid is on the new Jonathan Nelson record and Stephen Hurd album, as well. He's also playing with CeCe Winans now.
Allen Mabson is playing on a few studio projects. I just can't name any of them. Trust me, he's nice tho.
Diante Johnson is a player from Chicago. He's on a couple of Chicago Mass projects. Nice and solid

Spank what you know about that St Paul SOP cd! He was ok on "Not the Same", but he killed it on "Your House Won't Stand". It took me years to figure out those licks.

"Your House" knocked me out of my seat and I pumped it for years since!
