1-4-2-5 Progression?
« on: July 16, 2008, 08:08:07 PM »
Just Wondering ?/?  Do you play a 1-4-2-5 sometimes with up-tempo congregational songs or hymns?  I use this progression a lot when I have no keyboard or organ player.  It seems to work well with many of those songs.

In the progression for the 1 and 2, I mostly use Major or/ and 13th chords and for the 4 and 5, I mostly use Major or/and 9th chords.

You can follow the harmonized major scale and let your 2 be a minor chord.

My turn-around is usually a 2-5-1.

If necessary, I do spice it up with runs and licks.

Have you been baptized in Jesus' name and received the Holy Ghost?
(Acts 2:37,38 and 19:1-7)

I feel you on this.DO not forget about the Uriah bounce :P Work some slides in there from time to time.Playing by yourself, you can throw in some bass lines to spice it up.Are you a pemium member,Uriah show how he get down with these type songs.Throw in some passing chords also. You ever check out Bobby Jones show. His guitar player is sooo bad.Songs like this,he work with double notes, singles, riffs, throughout the whole song.Do you have Gospel Legends Dvd, the brother on that play the sameway.G.E Patterson, have a two dics cd,with that type of music. It is really nice.Hopefully, some others will give some ideals. What runs,or licks do you get down with.We can not forget about the 7th chords,or dominant chords.Give you that blues type feel.

Sometimes my 1-4 sounds like the "Uriah Bounce" ;D, then I would progress to the 2-5 and an augmented chord.

Below are runs I sometimes throw in my progression, key of "A"

e-------------------------------------------------------
b-----------------------------------------------10~~~-
g-------------------------------------9---11-----------
d----------------------7-----9/11----------------------
a---------------7--9-----------------------------------
E---5----7/9-------------------------------------------

e-------------------------------------------------------
b---8--8--8--------7----5------------------------------
g---9--9--9--------7----5h6----------------------------
d--------------7----------------------------------------
a-------------------------------------------------------
E-------------------------------------------------------

Here's a 1-4-2-5 progression in the key of A
      A                                D9            B9(no 5th)   E9
e---------------------------5--5--5----x--x--x-----7---7--7---
b---2-----------------2-----5--5--5----2--2--2----7---7--7--
g---2-----------2--5--2-----5--5--5----2--2--2----7---7--7--
d---2-----2--4--------2-----4--4--4----1--1--1----6---6--6--
a------3/4------------------5--5--5----2--2--2----7---7--7--
E----------------------------x--x--x----x--x--x----x---x--x--

Thanks Rown,

However Uriah, Dave,  jlynnb1, JayP, GMansAxe, etc. are on a higher level than me.

They are truly blessed and annointed guitarists.  I enjoy learning from them.  ;D
