Well, the Lakland 55-02 didn't last long. I decided it was just not the bass for me so I replaced it with..............

DW, which Lakland is that, the Joe Osborn or the Darryl Jones?

Whichever it is, it is beautiful! When you tire of it, I'm first in line! :D

So how does it compare to the 55-02?  I never got any real seat time with the JO5

Great looking bass!!  ;)  (See avatar for the RW/Tort/J-retro version

Dig the maple/ash.

IMHO, the JO has that jazz bass vibe covered, hands down.  The 55-02 is more versatile if you throw in the Musicman vibe.  Mine had the Barts that some say are more dark or polite.

Can't go wrong in the grand scheme of things with either.  I made a tough choice and sold my 55-02 and kept the JO5.  The JO5 can travel in any circle.

Maybe it was the new Lakland electronics but I just could not get a pleasing amplified sound out of the 55-02. If it was the old Barts, it may have been a different story. I like the way he JO5 sounds acoustically and amplified. It also suits my playing style better. I couldn't find a good comfort zone on the 55-02. I like the JO5 passive. I'm also eyeballing a DJ5. I'm tired of buying batteries. If I want a pre I may just get an outboard pre.

That is a (Gibson) Tobias Deluxe 5 which WAS my main go to bass. The Lakland has now taken over but I'll still use the Tobias when I play jazz.
