Learning bass notes

i'm a beginning bass player and i'm having a hard time learning all the notes on my bass (4 string). Does anyone have any advice on how i can learn my notes. any patterns memorization systems will help. another question; when playing a song in whatever key are you to hold your left hand in a specific position? example: if a song is in the key of c what would be my left hand position?

To start learning your notes on your bass, start with the strings.  Each string is a note and the frets after it represent a half step on the piano.  The string notes are:

Fattest / 4th string: E
3rd string: A
2nd string: D
Smallest / 1st string: G

So, learn your piano notes first then learn them on the bass.  I'll give you an example:

4th string is E, 1st fret is F, next is F#/Gb, next is G, etc.  You see what I mean?  Every half step on the piano is one fret on the bass.

wait cant you tune your bass so that you can get Cs and stuff or is it just those 4 notes?

You can tune your bass up or down, but i wouldn't recommend that.  Just learn the notes as they are then u don't have to worry about that.  Also, in order to learn all your notes start with one string at a time.  For instance
the 4th string, which is E. Start with that her it is:

4th string - E
4th string 1st fret - E# or F
 "      "     2nd  "   - F# or Gb
 "      "     3rd   "   - G
and so on, then move to the next string.

2 string (A) hold down 3 is a C
2 string (A) hold down 1 is a E flat
and 3 string (D) is open and is D

Its easier to read it like this(well at least for me)
