Guitar Chords for Church!
« on: December 30, 2004, 02:11:18 PM »
I play electric guitar for my church and been looking for some new stuff to learn. Lets say we are playing in G what are some chords or chord progressions would go really good with it. Would any Major 7th Chords go with it?

The major 7 is a very distinct voicing, and it's hard (IMO) to get it to fit where it didn't orginally go.  Of course, the best way is to just jam on something and use whatever sounds good to your ears--theory out the window!

I try to get away with as many 7ths, min7ths, and 9ths as I can.  I find that the biggest thing to keep it interesting is simply learning at least 3 ways to finger any chord.  That doesn't change the actual voicing, of course, but it puts you in a different textural range, so you can fill the spot that needs filled.

Welcome, by the way.  Hit us back with anything you may need (or any thing you may have!).

God bless.

Not sure what you are looking for?  The key of G and 7th's?  If you do a standard 1, 4 5 in G, that is G, C D.  Then the D would be D7th.  Not sure what you are looking for here.  You must follow the music and the chords match the melody.

I would say to learn, in this case, with the G chord, as many positions and variations of G. Use box chords, barr chords and triads.  To back up a chours or solos you need a full sound so box and barr chords are good.  During the verses you can fill with triads and little runs, being carefull not to jump on the singer.  You might even try a capo once in awhile.

You also might try and pick the melody of a song in the chords.

Good luck and God Bless

Kirk

My bro, you may want to go to delicatefade.com and "really" learn about Chrisitan songs, charts, and guitar tabs. They are the best.  Yet, to answer your question. Any chords will do, when especially when the Holy Spirit is involved. He can make any minor chord blend with major7ths to suspended chords.  Stop analyzing the chords and have fun!
Cheers!

:D ...so should I just assume that all those folks who play really bad music havn't consulted the holy spirit?....I don't doubt what the holy spirit can do...but I would take swimming lessons before I tried to walk on water!......Maybe you should Analyze and have fun at the same time.....and save the congregation any unneeded bad music! :)
