« on: November 22, 2004, 12:48:05 AM »
i just got into black gospel last year and have been playin with the gospel choir here at west chester university- we are really smokin these days but my only problem is that though i am very in tune with the progressions and my own style of soulful leads i was wonderin what guitarists out there do real quick right hand picking-ive noticed 2 better players than me do that when they demonstrated a typical gospel lick.  hope someone can help me--maybe its a philly thing
peace

Are you talking about alternate picking (up-down-up-down, etc.) ?

I do a hybrid that some refer to as "efficiency" picking--I hit a note the direction my hand is travelling anyhow (I do most of my bends this way, some are down, some are up...).  This seems to be even faster that flat-out alternate picking.

If you are trying to build right hand speed, sit and run through scales, but pick every note alternately.  Or you can just run through finger exercises this way (like 1,2,3,4 on each string, picking d,u,d,u).  Oh, some folks plant their pinky on the guitar to use as a "post" for their hand; I don't really do this though.  I've also seen some dudes look like they dislocated their thumb on command, then they just RIP it up.

Hope that's what you meant.

My bad, I misunderstood you.

I don't really have any examples for you, either.  Sorry, man.

carlton pearsons- azusa praise videos have great close ups of the guitarist
during shouts & he uses a very vast picking technique which almost sounds bluegrassy or country ....also joe paces guitarist is awesome at this style......there are also videos out that I've heard about but cannot find called "Groovin for GOD"....

Check out Phil Keaggy and the Robert Randolph band. Go to Bethany.com and check out the Bethany World Prayer Center Cd/DVD combo's.  It shows the guitarist really well on More of God. The combos sell for 20.00. Very good deal. Also, this guitarist isn't saved yet, though I believe if you get Joe Satriani's book dated from the early 90's, this will bless your guitar fingers off the fret board!
